Better than putting a 5spd knob on a 6 spd. Can't count the # of times a tech has gone to back my car out of a bay and inched forward instead.

Awesome writeup!

I'll be getting the 5 speed swap done this winter.

I was wondering I'm looking to pick up a IX trans, I have an VIII any issue may arise? I understand now I need a IX harness.

Am I better off picking up a VIII trans?

Thanks!

VIII trans has a longer 3rd & 4th gear....IX trans has a longer 1st gear...

And shorter 5th.

And I'm not totally sure but I don't think you need a IX harness for your VIII. The speed sensor and the reverse switch is the same, but the connector that connects to the main harness is different from VIII and IX.

Can you tell I'm in the process of swapping in a 5spd too?

As an aside, if you waited one more week to buy Chris's trans it would have been mine! Heck, 3 more days even lol. Now I have to wait 3+ weeks to ship another trans to shep and basically build the same trans you have now.

Haha, nice! I'm not even doing my swap soon...Still need to send my non acd t-case out to be built, decide & purchase a clutch plus a bunch of other goodies I am looking into that I will do all at once with the trans...

Yup I hear ya. I'm basically building out my whole drivetrain from flywheel to wheels (excluding axels and front LSD). I'm on a short timeline though since my evo is my only car. And I usually average 2k miles driving a month....hard to do with it sitting on a lift.

Thanks for the info guys.

So on the 5 speed, the speed sensor and reverse switch are interchangeable between both the VIII and IX? And I could get away using the harness on my VIII MR?

Bump.

Are the speedo sensors and reverse switches interchangeable between both the VIII and IX? I'm getting yes and no from different sources.

speedo sensor on 5 speed is gear driven, 6 speed is magnetic.

I understand that both the speed sensor and reverse switch are different on the 5 speed vs the 6 speed.

My question is are the speed sensors and reverse switches interchangeable between the VIII and IX 5 speed? Different sources are telling me yes and then no. They do look the same.

You guys swapping out from 6 to 5 speed.. Is this because your 6speed gives out?

Is it because of the ratio's? personal preference?

I've never been a fan of the 6 speed for starters, dislike the extra gear. And yeah I dislike the short gears.

But mainly because my 6 speed shifted like crap. They have lubrication problems. In racing they over heat and blow 4th. They're also very loud.
