Its similar in design and they are both 2 wire but the 5 speed one is physically larger. i was thinking of going to a wrecking yard to see if I could find the right size plug so I can cut and solder it. has anyone else tried doing that?
I will be starting my swap in a few weeks! i still have no idea what parts are missing!

Picked up this stuff from a local evo 8 owner who just totaled it. Got the sifter, shifter cansole, the cables. Didnt pick up any harness as such yet nor did i get a tranny mount. I guess ill just buy that stuff new!

Lemme know how the swap goes with you.

Thanks!

Pete, How are you liking the 5spd compared to the 6spd now?

I know you asked Pete but I did the same swap so I can give you my feedback.

I thought I would miss my 6-speed (I went through two of them, the last one being a rebuilt TRE stage 2 6spd) going to a 5spd.

I put in a TRE stage 2 5-speed, with Evo 9 1st and Evo 8 4th.

I actually like the 5 speed BETTER. With bushings and such (I upgraded my 6spd bushings as well) and the reworked trans by TRE, the 5speed just feels better to me. It feels "stronger", it shifts "cleaner" and the gear spacing feels better with the powerband of my Evo (412whp / 403wtq)

It actually cruises on the hwy in top gear better and smoother then the 6spd as well.

I'm very happy I made the swap. I've had it for a little over a year now. I wish I did the 5spd swap when I broke my first 6spd, and not when I broke the 2nd. Would have saved me a bit of money.

Does anyone know if you need the IX 5 speed harness when swapping a 5 speed into a IX MR?

Tonight I tried to hook up an VIII 5 speed harness and it is physically different from the main harness plug on my IX MR harness. I wonder if the 5 speed harness from a IX would work?

Not a huge deal, I have a an engine harness from a VIII with the correct connector so I can cut that off and make an adapter for my IX harness.

I have an VIII 5-speed harness for the tranny. It plugs in to the speedo and reverse just fine but it doesn't connect to the the rest of the IX car harness, the plugs are different.

You need the IX 5speed harness. They are different on 8/9

Thanks for confirming what I figured was the case, and thanks for the part number earlier in the thread for the correct harness.

I bought Scheides' old VIII that he rolled, I think I am going to build an adapter from his old engine harness plug if the dealer price is $$$.

Thanks Bryan!

*EDIT* Mitsu wants $131 for the harness before discount, ouch! I'll be building an adapter.

Hi all,

I have a wrecked GSR IX and just picked up a MR IX, if I understood correctly, I can just do a straigth swap right?

Now, about the harness...does it involve cutting and soldering? Or just plug and play as well?

Sorry if this has been covered already....

Uhh guys, I actually already clicked "Buy it Now" on a 2003 VIII 5-speed to swap into my IX MR and it just occurred to me that 03-04 cars didn't have ACD. An 03 trans would NOT work in my car assuming I want to keep ACD, right? I'm sure I can explain to the seller that I made a mistake. Good thing I didn't pay yet!

Will a 2005 VIII 5-speed work fine? I'd rather have the longer 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears from the VIII. I already picked up a IX 5-speed harness.

AFAIK You can use any year trans in any evo. The ACD portion is in the transfer case.

Wait I am a bit confused about this. Can I keep the MR console if I swap the stock shift boot for an aftermarket 5-speed shift boot? I am not planning on using a short shifter. Is the shift boot the main reason people don't keep the MR console when doing the swap?

I'm picking up a low mileage Evo IX tranny this week and having it rebuilt locally to do this swap. I'm quite excited. Have a few questions though.

I was planning on ordering the following aftermarket parts:
-Buschur Short Shifter
-Buschur Shifter Base Bushings
-Buschur Shifter Bushings (the underhood ones)

I was wondering what OEM parts this would eliminate from GST Motorsports post with P/N's.

I believe it is the following:
-MN168249 Lever,gearshift
-MR232147 Bushing,gearshift x2
-MR103559 Bushing x4
-MB829013 Bushing,gearshift

I might be way off, especially because the number of bushings in the Buschur kits does not equal the number that I pulled off the OEM list.
