Quote: I kept the MR center console and the only problem is the shift boot can't stretch far enough to stay with the shift knob when you're in 2nd, 4th, and R. I'm going to switch to a 5MT shift console because of this.
Do you or does anyone think you could keep the 6spd console piece after doing the 5 spd swap if you got a short shifter installed, would that work fine? I was gonna get the WORKS short shifter when I do the swap and I kinda wanted to keep the MR console.

Yes that is what I am doing. The shift boot doesn't fit snug up top because it's designed for the 6 spd reverse ring. You could customize it. I just got lazy and haven't got around to doing that.

Ah I see, yea I could mess with it. My moms friend owns a dress shop so maybe she could cut and sew it to the right size for me

From what Ive gathered, there are no problems between an 8 trans and a 9MR transfer case.

i have been debating whether this swap will make the car less smooth.. going from 6 speed to 5. after you rebuild with all the tsb's how is the smoothness?? do you also think it is worth getting jon at tre to service the transfercase??

if the tq rating for the 6 speed is at 280 or something of that sort, what are you all pushing on your setups that'd make you want to make the swap?? thanks

i planned on just getting a used transmission/rebuild and perform the swap along with a clutch. didnt mean to hijack this thread

Right now Im at 400tq, so Im surprised the 6spd is ONLY grinding 3rd and 4th. Im going up even more in power in the summer, so I dont wanna have the 6spd in, itll only be a matter of time till it gets worse.

Ya I believe there is a 12mph or so difference in top speed between the stock 6spd and the stock evo9 5spd, with stock redline of course. Topped out the 5spd will put you around 150 I believe and the top speed at redline on the 6spd is 162.

The Evo 8 5th gear is longer though than the Evo9 5th gear.

Im currently in the middle of a swap in my 9 MR...I have an evo 8 5 speed that im putting into it. I have all the parts accept for the harness, The 6 speed harness has the same speedometer plug as the 5 speed but the reverse switch plug is different. Its similar in design and they are both 2 wire but the 5 speed one is physically larger. i was thinking of going to a wrecking yard to see if I could find the right size plug so I can cut and solder it. has anyone else tried doing that?
