Most of the stock shims I took out were around .058". Add a few thou freeplay and the typical gap was over .062". You need to find solder that's thicker than .065".

@Dave W. Thank you for the info! I'm not surprised on the shims being close. I've taken apart 2 transfer cases that had the same exact pinion shims in them.

My trans was rebuilt by a reputable shop prior to me learning to do it on my own so the shim in there likely isn't what it came with but I replaced my input shaft hence wanting to check tolerances

Bringing this back from the depths!

New mission this winter is to install a Liberty Face Plated 1/2 gear and do a PAR billet double synchro 4th gear. 700whp on STM's dyno is too much for a synchro trans and I want to build a hybrid.

Has anyone built their own trans with either Liberty faceplated gears and/or the PAR straight cut gears?

BUMP!

Looking for input from anyone who may have built their own trans with faceplated gears and if they did anything outside of the norm when assembling it?

Just set the bearings preload on the output shaft and diff on the right side, and the clearance on the input shaft on the loose side of spec.

Have you done the rebuild yourself before? That's the first time I've heard of using the looser end of spec for a build.

Also- clarify the right side preload if you don't mind

The input shaft is on ball bearings, not tapered roller bearings. The more room it has to not allow thrust loads to effect the bearings, the better.
