Very good info RSMike. This should provide a good idea of where each stand. Even though some of the tests are older and they have probably changed the formulas (additives and/or detergent packages) at least this gives a starting point.

Great post

Excellent info RSMike.

Just to throw a little more on the fire... Looks like Mobil 1 just became the "official oil" of SCCA

Mobil 1 is a good oil. There is no doubt about it, but chances are this was just a marketing scheme by Mobil. So no matter what oil it was, as long as they had the cash to buy the sponsorship, then their name would be on the SCCA website instead. Just my .02.

Did you note that right across those two tables any oil ending in 50 as in 5w50 15W50 had raised levels of Zinc and Phosphorus . Of the lower viscosity ones the 0W40 was a little higher at I think 1000 and 1100 PPM .

Towards the bottom of the second table is the bike synthetics Mobil 1 4T 10W40 and the V-Twin 20W50 . Both levels are quite high which is about what you'd expect for a decent 4 stroke super bike engine .

Your calls , I like the look of the 15w50 car version and the bike 4T 10W40 . They don't mention the 15W50 version of 4T that I use .

Don't forget that first number is a could pouring number not a cold viscosity rating , 4T 15W50 is quite fluid here at 15 degrees C ambient temperature and pumps around fine at lower temps than that .

A .

Going by the comparative numbers in RSMike's list above, what do you guys think of the numbers for the Motul 300V Competition 5W-40? I am thinking of switching from my current Mobil1 0W-40 to this oil.

Ive only read a few of the posts on here, but basically I can beleive Mobile is having issues with evos. Working at a Mercedes Benz dealer as a tech I can say that it has been killing oil level sensors on them. Mobile has been frantically changing their formulas at least a few times trying to resolve this issue, meanwhile all MB of NA wants us to do is replace the oil until a solution is found. This seemed to have started back in 2008, not sure whats going on currently though. Hearing all this back then I personally stopped using any mobile 1 products. A lot of guys like mobile 1 so take this info for what it is, Im not trying to sway anyone to not use it.

Spark,

I have heard of a few people running this in their turbo cars with good results. From the chart above (might be out dated) it looks like the zinc and phos levels are more than adequate. When I made the switch from Mobil 1 to the Brad Penn 20W-50, I talked to three people, FP, Buschur and then Blackstone (My turbo builder, engine builder, and a known oil testing group). The first two to see what they recommend and why, and the last one to give me a printout of the oils detailed analysis and asked how it held up under decent wear conditions. I would double check the figures listed above, but as I stated, there are a few friends I have that run that oil on their turbo-ed cars (I am pretty sure one runs it in his VIII). I will ask one if they have a printout of an oil analysis I can post here for you.

Just call around and see. Most independent companies like FP, BR and even Blackstone don't really stand to make any money by recommending one oil to you. Like many get after people using the Brad Penn saying that people just use it because BR recommends it, this is not true. He really doesn't stand to make any money off of it (unless you buy the cases shipped from him, but there are many closer vendors in my area so I don't). If anything FP and BR want to avoid failures so they don't have to deal with fixing your broken parts so your choice is just as important to you as it is to them because in their cases there is usually a warranty involved.

Good luck

I just changed the oil (with my new turbo ) and am trying Mobil 1 15W-50. The one thing I have noticed is my oil pressure is definitely higher - idle, moderate RPMs, and full WOT.

I sent in a M1 10W-30 sample and am interested in seeing the results. 3K miles from now I will send in a 15w-50 sample and compare....

Quick Reply: Don't use mobil 1, it will ruin your journal turbo
