New turbo setup?

I've been trying to do some research, but I'm not finding anything as conclusive as I would like.

Basically it's time for me to ditch my current 50trim and step up to something better. Right now the choices are 35R and HTA35R. I've read that the HTA spools better, but can give up power up top to the regular 35R. Is this true?

I have a 2.3L with 1000cc inj, cams (HKS) and headstuds, ETS 3.5" FMIC, Spoolin Up COP and I guess that would be it for the supporting mods (I'm assuming that I wouldn't need to say TBE, etc.)

My goal is to be around 500whp on pump gas. I pretty much NEVER drag race the car so something with quicker spool is what I want. I made 413/417 on a Mustang dyno with my 50trim setup on pump gas.

Anyway I'm up in the air for any turbo options you guys might think. Not sure that I'm interested in any stock frame turbos.

I need this car back on the road SOON so this decision is critical. Plus I'm not one to change setups a lot so I want something that works and will work for a long time!!

If all you are looking at is 500MD I would personally go with a TS T4 HTA3582 (give you some room if you want to grow and move on to E85). However I don't think you will reach 500MD on a HTA3582 with HKS cams. You need some larger sticks. I gained 90hp when I upgraded from my HKS 272/280 to my new GSC cams. In order for you to do pump 500MD the 3582 or 86 would be your best bet.

This is a before and after with the new cams, nothing else changed. FP Black (3582) only 25psi

look into a borg warner s259, or smaller s300 frame turbos.. both are VERY overlooked turbos that make awesome power..

with your 2.3 i'd suggest an s362, Should make upwards of 600-650 on your setup with c16

HTA wheels are definitely a big step up from the older technology of the regular 35r wheel, both fp's and bw's are great turbos

good luck!

Yeah, with your 2300cc displacement, I would say that a TS HTA 3586/1.06 is one good option for an easy 500MD WHP on pumpgas. S2 cams at least.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know my cams are holding me back at this point, but it's one of those "one thing at a time" deals.

I'll still look into it, but which cams? GSC S1's or S2?? Unfortunately for S2 I would have to build the head a bit more huh? As of now my rev limit is around 7k for safety sake. I know if I could rev out a bit more I would be much better off.

How big are your current cams?? The S1's are 268's and the S2's are 274's I don't know about the S3's, but they are all the same price so pick the right ones for your application. You can just drop the cams in if you like, but why not do your valve springs, retainers and seats as well as ARP head studs

Borg Warner just came out with a new series I think called the EFR series. Really looks promising. However I do not believe they are ready for anyone to go buy yet....

Ya I would at least rev to 7.8k. Most people however rev the 2.3 to 8.5 with no problems. I would get S2 or larger. I have custom stroker cams in my car from GSC but you have to have larger enough valve reliefs to run them.

His motor if built properly should already have L19s which are much better than ARP

My cams are 264/272. They worked well with the 50 trim I had in there, but I'm doubting their ability with the setup I'm looking at. I'll probably be able to get by for right now, but in the future I'll have to look at an entire head build to make this setup work it's best.
