Just a quick question. Does the oil pan on the 2.4L have any higher capacity than the 2.0L or is it pretty much the same?

I don't believe it's any bigger, but if you do use it, it will need to be drilled/tapped for the return line

I really like the idea of this build. So many haters about non built motors, but if you read the topic, it does say cheapest. So let the hate go, and leave the build alone! We're all going to be witnesses to the success, or failure of this project. Personally, I hope it works good..

at the end of the day you really dont buy a evo to be cheap on any level. cheapness usually leads to failure and if you think about it the stock 2.0 can hold more tq and putting a stock 4g64 in there is a major downgrade. anybody that bought this car even if it works is wasting money unless its sold for less then 9k u can get stock evos for 10k if u look whether salvage or not. Now it appears the op is going to build the motor so all is well

It really doesn't make sense to not build it. All you need is a set of 86.5 je pistons and some decent manley I beam rods and some bearings To have a very capable platform . I have a set of manley H beam rods I'm not using you can pm me about. They are not the strongest set available for this car but better than the stock 4g64 rods for sure, maybe slightly stronger than stock evo rods.

I disagree that buying an evo isn't cheap on any level. They are cheap to buy, register (here in Iowa), insure (for me), and to maintain. Parts are everywhere for the 4g63, and the car has so few amenities in the interior that there isn't anything to stop working. If you compare it to other vehicles that can do all of the same things (fast in a straight line, corner well, 4 door, and awd) the evo is dirt cheap. Unless you are a lesbian and want to drive a subaru, the next closest thing I can think of would be an audi A8.

Did you not read that my 2.0 block is cracked? $2500 for an unknown mileage 2.0 or 1600 for the same boat JDM... or $400 bucks for a 2.4.

If the numbers work on the H-beam rods, does anybody have pistons? Who sells bearings? It seems like a lot of the performance shops don't want to talk unless you are buying their complete shortblock (totally understandable, I probably wouldn't either).

Pm'd you. You honestly want to go with oem bearings from your local dealer ship when setting up the tolerances correctly they will offer the sizes / clearances you need.

An A8 is probably a bad comparison.. the A4 would be much closer, but I was mostly using that to compare cost, and cost of ownership on something that is 4 door, awd, and fun to drive.

Just picked up my 2.4 from my local salvage yard. Pics to come! I'm going to be going stock as I originally intended.

You do realize that a STOCK 2.4L will not handle the same ammount of power as a STOCK evo 2.0L right?...The reason people go with the 2.4L is to BUILD the motor to handle boost (a stock 2.4L is not built to handle boost)...which in turn gives you more power/faster spool due to displacement...

I think you'd be best off to talk to someone who has a lot of experience with these cars. You are running yourself into the ground financially and destroying the resale of your car.

SDevo13 - I appreciate your concern.. but like I have said before, this is an experiment. The 2.4l engine and internals will handle stock levels of boost easily as long as it isn't over revved. The car has a salvage title anyway, so the car is only worth 10-13 at most when finished. I think you and some others are still missing the point of this thread and build. It says "Worlds cheapest 2.4 build" which is exactly what I am doing. It is to offer an inexpensive solution if your stock evo short block is junk.
