Hey DB,

Can this shifter be used instead of the one you are using? I think it would give the car a more all around sporty feel instead of an automatic drag car, since the stick always returns to the center position after every shift!

I was actually asked that last night too.

I have used the Pro Sticks in every drag car we ever built and was very familiar with how they worked and I like how they work. That is why I started with that shifter. I had to work out the bracket to mount it and the shift arm/shift plate to work with this transmission. Obviously they don't make a shifter for this trans or the plate for it.

I would assume that, yes, I could use that shifter and I thought about using it when I started this.

Maybe I will do a short video later today, just on my phone to show you how nicely this one works. The thing I don't like about the ratchet is you have to "count" the gear you are in, there is no indicator because the shifter is always centered. I don't like that at all. The shifter we used we powder coat the cover so it looks nice and kind of matches and then I install the indicator on the shift cover.

Let me do the video before you decide you like a shifter that you can't glance down and see what gear you are in. I wouldn't change what I have now.

I run that ratchet shifter in my setup dave, as you ratchet, there is an indicator to tell you what gear it is in, however it is as you say always self centering. Its preference as you said at this point.

Have you opened up the transmission yet ? How does the fluid look?

DB,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm looking foward to the video! I can really understand what you are saying and I know that simplicity is always better, but there might be a solution to what you are saying!

I think that a combination of that shifter and this digital setup to know in what shift you are would be AWESOME. Maybe a little bit more complex and perhaps for some people unnecessary, but I think it would make it look as more than an automatic/drag application!

Ah, OK, that indicator is pretty cool, I see how it works. No offense, please don't be offended but I don't like the looks of that shifter at all compared to the Pro Stick.

No, Warren, haven't opened the trans yet. I am pulling it myself and keep doing something else in between stopping. I'm slow anyway cause I hate air tools. I have to get the shaft out of the Tcase, push the tcase off to the side and I think the trans is ready to drop out other than two mounts left. I plan to have it to the trans shop tomorrow and diagnosed. Metal on the magnetic drain plug.....quite a bit of it. It would be nice if something broke that can be welded up, like a diff or something, but I doubt it.

No offense taken at all , simply sharing info

Whoops saw your post.... I hope its something small like a clutch band, Hopefully the metal on the magnet was from the gears breaking in ( Hopefully).

Very cool David! I'd love to this mod once you have all the bugs worked out.

I'm running this Winters shifter (formerly Art Carr) in my rock crawler (4 speed) and have been happy with it. You can feel what gear you're in or simply look at it. Running a manual valve body so I'm always having to shift the gears.

But I have to say I like the look of the shifter you went with. Very clean and unsuspecting.

I may have to look at an Evo GTA for a race car instead of a manual. No one wants them here, so cheaper than a 5 speed to buy.

GregM, I need some help! Can you see if you can get the part number for the GTA's "Front Output Shaft" and let me know what it is?

So you guys know I have semi-good news. The front output shaft broke, it broke in two places and is twisted about 5 splines worth. Aaron and myself are talking to multiple people about making new ones and I want to see if the GTA uses a different shaft from the factory that may hold more power.

I'll post pics of the twisted shaft on our Facebook page cause it's easy to post them there for anyone interested.

The gearbox output shaft should be the same as the Airtrek which is MD758733 from what the Mitsi ASA tells me. The GTA ratio is 3.3 thou (same as the Airtrek), so that wouldn't work for you?

I understood from Aaron that the output shaft and diff gear from the gearbox you are using wouldn't fit in my box either, as that was the first question I asked him when I heard the ratio was 4.11. I had talked about making a custom shaft and gear to change to 4.11 for my box because of this.
