89 octane?
89 octane?
Ok guys i took a trip to niagra falls and stopped for gas at full service station. I was very tired from driving and i wasnt 100% with it, the guy comes up to the window and i tell him 10 please, still not thinking anything of it, he pumps 10 then it hits me, all ****,what did he put in 93, 91 , or 89. i drive away and all power seems to be fine like he put premium in it, but just to ease my mind i need to know if it was ****ty 89 octane what kinda problems could occur from this 1 time accident, again this is my first turbo car and first brand new one so i treat it accordingly, like i said all power was still there so im pretty sure it was premium, thanks guys
Re: 89 octane?
The biggest fear is hitting full-knock before the ECU can retard timing. Also, i'm not sure how much the ECU can knock retard before it's "taken all its slack".
But... We have 91, 89, 87 out here in California, so you're running our 'midgrade'. I would say stay off boost as much as you can until you can fill up with good stuff.
ferb!

i dont think gas pumpers are actually sharp people.. i doubt he even noticed.... dont worry just granny shift it and throw in a bottle of octane booster like da dude said and ur fine..
one time, i drove by NJ and the guy was like, 87? I tell him no ultra 94. He was confused and asked me again 87? I tell him my car needs at least 93 so put 94 in there or the engine will blow. Then he quickly placed in 94 for me. 89 shouldnt be a problem. Just make sure u drive slow and stay off the boost. If u have a boost controller, turn that boost off. 0 psi should be fine on a 4G63 with 89 octane. I'm in school in Buffalo. Very near Niagara Falls. Let's meet up sometime.
I would actually stay away from Octane Boosters. If you're gonna add something to the tank, pop in a gallon or two of xylene or toluene. Easiest place to find it is at a good paint supply house.
Over-the-counter octane boosters contain a lot of kerosene or other similar things. Instead of providing a better gasoline, they merely provide enough 'crap' in the air that the charge won't predetonate.

Observations:
Always always get a receipt. If the gas is truly bad you need a receipt to prove you bought it there to try to get compensated. I'm not talking wrong octane but truly bad gas, i.e. watered etc.
When in doubt, add a bottle of octane boost as mentioned.
When in doubt, stay out of boost until that tank is run down and a tank of proper grade is run through. To me that means 2 tanks through, the original doubtful one and one full tank of proper grade.
