Quick question about the timing belt. How could I tel if it needs to be replaced or if it is good? I ask because I got my Evo from a dealer and don't know the service history of it. Great info though.

How many miles are on the car? You could pull off the upper timing belt cover and look at the belt to see its condition. If it looks clean and no damage it could be alright but you never know.

If you have a lot of miles on it though it would be good peace of mind to get it done. Just my thoughts.

It has 67,00 on it right now. I pulled the cover off yesterday and it looked great, didn't see any smoothness on the ribs or cracking like I figured I would if it was an old belt.

Can dealership contact previous owner to ask where service was done? Timing service is every 60k

My Evo has only about 19k miles, but it's 15 years old and on the original timing belt. Do people ever see them fail from age rather than usage?

I have tried multiple times top contact the dealer and have gotten no where. And since it is down at the moment from some spirited driving on the dragon. I will be changing it very soon just because I don't know.

Something I'm also curious about as I'm at 20k on original timing components. Everything still looks brand new.

Will the Gates products be better than http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-4G63-MITSUBISHI-EVO-8-TIMING-BELT-KIT-/200756635304?hash=item2ebe0726a8&vxp=mtr
or go OEM?

Thanks

You can never go wrong with OEM but Gates are pretty good quality and made to be just like OEM quality. It's really up to you and what you want to spend.

And for anyone out there that's piecing together this kit, ACDelco idler pulley is EXACTLY OEM. Has the Koyo markings and 6006RRID. Part number is the same as the Gates (T42017). Just putting it out there that you can save $20 on an OEM idler pulley by getting the ACDelco part instead of the Gates.

I work at a Napa store and also as a mechanic. I have installed gates timing belts and components in many many cars with great success.

I don't see anyone talking about seals on here though. Anyone do cam/crank seals when they do a belt? I always do them when I do a belt in my other vehicles. Just curious what everyone else thinks.
