interesting news. perhaps not a surprising result considering that 4th gear on the 5-speed can also get cooked.

i've been at more than 400 ft-lbs for a few years, and since spring time i've been at about 440 ft-lbs. no launches and no extended runs. it can handle it if you're nice to it.

If anyone is interested in trading a 6-speed for a five drop me a line. My Evo has 135k on it, original owner. Tranny has been babied and the proof is I'm still running strong on the original clutch. I have a 420 mile commute to work these days(thank heaven it isn't every day) and I really would like a little overdrive 6th gear. I also have an extra 5-speed sitting in my garage that I got for a project I'll never get to.

You'll be better off rebuilding the 5-speed with a 4.11 final drive. Your 5th gear cruising rpm will be lower than with a stock 6 speed. Or better yet, don't subject your Evo to a 420 mile commute. Poor thing.

I went from a 6spd (blew it up) to a 5spd ultimate ratio with 4.11 FD gear. I found cruise rpms actually around the same as my 6spd. My combo is I'd say not great for DD anyways cause 1st gear is hard to get going with an aggressive clutch, especially up hills. Same with reverse. And the rpm drop between shifts is huge. Would be good for BIG turbos and 1/4mile trap speeds though. Sucks for stock turbos and road racing. (ie. exactly what I do)

when I decide to replace my transmission do you guys recommend rebuilding with shep or jacks or just buying a low miles used oem 5 speed trans? My 04 evo 8 has a 5 speed and its notchy going into 2nd and 3rd and has always grind into 5th is I don't shift slow.

Yes, but if you saw the canyon I go thru you would understand. Makes the whole drive worth it. I get .50 a mile from my company so it's not so bad. Plus, if I stop using it to commute, I have bigger turbos and aftermarket EFI sitting in my garage. Don't want to go down that road with this car. It's a Wednesday build for sure. Never had a single problem. Oil, filters and one timing belt. Here is to the 200K club.

I looked in to the 4.11's but don't want to take away any acceleration. I know a 6-speed will only drop rpm less than 200.

not the ideal thread for your question. however i will say that imho TRE is the way to go for gearbox rebuilds.

By the time my car reached about 55k I blew the 6 speed 3 times. First time 4th gear let go and cracked the case, second time 4th gear let go at the drag strip and the third time the transmission completly locked up in a parking lot and the car came to a sreeching hault. At that point I've had enough and swapped to a Evo 8 5 speed.

I apologize, i don't have the graph of the 444wtq. This one is from the dyno day at TPG Tuning last summer.

My 6-speed is holding up fine though. Like others have said, its all about how you treat it. I plan on putting my car back together this winter, without a TRE built 6 speed. It ran fine before and i don't plan on having much more power with E85. Also i have an extra stock 6-speed trans that has 40k less miles and is in better shape, that will be going back into the car in the next few weeks. Even if my power goals change and i really turn it up, we'll get to see how well the stock trans holds up to 440+wtq, 15k miles per year, and a few track days too. Ill be sure to update this when i can about how it holds up, or if it fails.
Also, I plan on running Low 11's in the 1/4, thats my goal.
