Another "what turbo should I get"
Another "what turbo should I get"
I have looked at several hundred threads on this topic. I have looked at dyno charts and checked the spool-up and power results. It is just hard to decide what turbo would be best when you cannot drive each one and form your own opinion. Some guys don't mind a bit of lag as long as it make good power up top. Some guys say they like spool and think the hta green is too laggy. So confusing without actually driving the car. So, I am looking for a turbo for a street car, no intention of racing. Stock block with all the bolt-ons. Looking at bbk full, hta green, ef 2.5/3. I do not want a upper laggy turbo. Not looking to build my stock evo ix engine. I want to use 93 octane fuel. Any opinion is welcome.
Any of those turbos mentioned are good stock replacement turbos. of the four you mentioned the BBK full is the smallest, the fp green and the ef2.5 are similar in size, and the ef3 is your biggest. The spool/lag time is always gonna be subjective as everyone has a different opinion on what is as what isn't leggy. the BBK full, fp green, and ef2.5 are all going to have similar spool characteristics and response within a couple hundred rpm's of each other. the ef3 is going to have the most top end power but also have the most lag. It also comes down to whether you want a ball bearing turbo or a journal bearing turbo. the ef2.5 and ef3 only come JB. The bbk full is BB and JB. The fp green is only BB. you will pay more for a BB turbo. The fp green is right around 2,350. The BBK full JB is around 1,950 and the bbk full BB is 2,500. The ef2.5 is right around 1,600 and the ef3 is around 1,700 and that's not including porting. Honestly none of them are bad options, but if I had to choose I'd pick the fp green. good luck
If 400wph Dynojet will meet your goals, you should really check this out

Turbo
It is hard to remember everything in a post. I will stick with a jb turbo for the price. Also my power goal is anywhere from 420 - 450 vd. I like the price of the ef2 but I do not think it will reach my power goal. Thanks for the replies.
MAP claims that on a Dynojet the EF2.5 will hit 425whp on 93 and the EF3 will hit 450whp on 93. If journal bearing is that route you wanna go then either of these turbos will get the job done. Personally between the two I would rock the EF3. I would sacrifice a little spool and response for more top end, and it'll be better for your stock block too cause you won't have as much low end torque. And if i read correctly you have a MR right?! The 6 speed trannys are a lot more delicate then the 5 speed, they don't handle added power and torque as well as the 5 speed. So for the sake of your stock block and your transmission get the slower spooling, higher top end EF3.

I just got my stock IX turbo built into a HTA 73 green with stock housing from FP. I also had them port it. I'm making about 450hp/390tq at 26psi on E85 with the upgrade. Also have full bolt ons minus cams and ported intake, exhaust, and o2 housing.
what kind of fuel do you wanna run...pump, e85, or race gas, water/meth? In regards to stock frame turbos I can tell you that on e85 a FP Black or a MAP EF4 will get you over 600, but probably not over 700. Granted you're also gonna need a lot of supporting mods as well. A full own turbo kit is your other option as well. Good turbos for those power goals would be precisions's 6262 or their 6466 turbo. Forced Performances HTA 3586 is also a beast of a turbo as well. Biggest downfall of those turbos is how laggy they are. a lot people running them are using 2.3L strokers. I've been seeming a handful of long rod 2.4L stroker motors pop up too. if you're content with around 615whp just pick up a fp black and some S3's. there's a member on here making 614whp and around 415wtq on a stock block Evo 9 with those two things. Good luck

+1. jb hta green is still available. and a stock ix turbo with a good hotside housing can be converted to an hta green for about $1k. have you seen my bbk full vs hta green thread? those two turbos are closer than most people realize. i still haven't made up my mind which i like better. the bbk powerband starts a few hundred rpm soon and feels more snappy in the 3500-4000 rpm range, but above 4000 rpm, i can't tell a difference in transient response between the two turbos. hta green can make a bit more peak power.
