ACD Pump Issue Solved
ACD Pump Issue Solved
Just bought an 06 Mr with about 48000 miles. All three acd lights would come on after the car warmed up. Determined to figure out the issue I began looking to the forums. Most common issue I found was pump plate corrosion so I bought the kit that is sold. Pulled the pump out and watched a you tube video on how to rebuild the pump with new plate. Reinstalled the pump and had no luck. Looked up how to pull fault codes off the ecu with pin jumping. Pulled a code 82 which i found out is a general faulty pump code. Found out that electrical could be the issue next and replaced the ACD relay located on the passenger side of the firewall and the little black fuse box on the positive terminal which was fried. The relay was more than likely working but for 25$ I figured I could eliminate one more variable. Once we could determine 12v of power was getting to the pump and it still was not activating i figured it had to be the pump motor. Pulled the cover of the motor off the pump and found the burnt copper wires. Then looking further into what caused the motor to burn. The gear mechanism was locked up and would not spin. When i pulled all the pieces apart i found the gear spun on the shaft and the set pin had sheared off. The pin that holds the gear in place on the shaft is the one issue that caused all the rest. Was able to find a used 05 Mr pump, took the working motor and gear mechanism, transplanted them to my pump. Bled the system a few times off the transfer case using the gas pedal ACD pump activation method. Pump is so quiet i could only tell it was working by the fluid being sucked into the system. Make sure not to top off fluid completely until car has sat for a few hours. The pump accumulator will push fluid back into the filling tank and the level with rise quite a bit. Finally have a working ACD system and the car handles noticeably different. Just posting to try and help others diagnose issues they may be having. Hit me up if you are having any ACD issues or need advice.
Thanks for your input. I have been driving my '06 around staring at the 3 ACD lights illuminated for about a year now. I guess I'll have to start trouble shooting and make a plan of attack. Thank you for the information on the relay....I have a feeling that the motor may have an issue. Very unfortunate as this is a California car w/less than 27k miles on it.
I'll PM you with any questions.
Thanks again,
Paul Langlie

I am in a world of hurt on my ACD Pump project. The more I keep working on it the worse it keeps getting. Your post caught my eye, though, because all of a sudden I am starting to have some weird problem like yours had.
My thread is here.

In the middle of troubleshooting what are now two pump and two solenoids I all of a sudden can't put the pump completely back together tightly without binding up the gears. The one you mentioned sheared the pin. I didn't lose any pieces, and I didn't change any except the orientation of the plate a few times for trial and error. Now the pin has marred the plate, both plates since I have the kit and the stock one. I am lost as to why the pin is being forced onto the plate now when I tighten the housing. Do you have any idea how that could be happening?
Also can you let me know where all the fuses and relays are for the system, since you just did that. I also always suspected electrical as my root cause. I just couldn't get the system to bleed properly anymore after my build. And, do you know what voltage actually drives the solenoid? 4.5V or 12V? I get both measurements at the harness.
I am losing my marbels trying to solve this issue.

I some other massive ACD thread I read there was a comment about the solenoid being inserted either way. I can guarantee that the solenoid has to absolutely go in the way it came out, otherwise it won't work. It has ports on one side, and flipping it 180 degrees will block them and no oil will come out. It was an old thread, but just incase anyone is wondering. Plug on the inside or over the allen bolt for the solenoid.
I am still trying to figure out why mine started binding the internal shaft pin against the plate.
Key turned but not on. gas pedal floored. The relay clicks pretty loud when i have the car in the garage. We did try to run 12v directly to relay with it off the car but i could not get it to activate. I bought one for 35 shipped i think. Gave me piece of mind. My relay cracks like a whip. Doing this also switches my map back to 91 and i gotta remind myself to switch back to E85. Worth the extra drive any day.
