Help! Starting issue.

Ok so Im having issues with my evo again So basically I am have a starting issue when I go to turn the key the engine won't turn over. All it does is making a clicking sound, lights and everything dim but nothing else happens. I have to sit ther and turn the key a bunch of times before it starts. I've noticed it happens more when I turn off my car and try to turn it on soon (within half hour-ish) after I turned it off.

This isn't my video, but this is EXACTLY what happens to me...

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like either your battery is too weak to turn the engine over.

Or the engine has too much resistance. See how easily you can crank the engine over with a ratchet.

Ok thanks I'l try that. But for some reason I get the feeling that its my battery even though I've gotten it checked twice. I'll let you know how this goes.

what mods you got? Any changes recently?
I have a feeling it may be related to fuel and coolant temp/ start up routine. Hopefully its just a weak battery(i doubt)

More than likely a bad starter out of the box. Happens a lot more than you may think. If the battery tests fine, and the new alternator is putting out sufficient voltage to it, that won't be an issue. The click is most likely the starter solenoid trying to engage the bendix to crank the engine but it is stuck. Mine does the same thing. Worse when hot and I go to re-start like after running into the store for 30 mins or something. Just clicks, have to turn the key half a dozen times till it fires. I just haven't gotten around to replacing or rebuilding the starter yet. OEM is a little pricey, worth it, but pricey nonetheless. Is the one you put in aftermarket? Just my opinion, but I would troubleshoot there for sure. Good luck.

Could be your battery, starter, or ignition switch. It can get tricky to test a battery. Make sure both terminals are clean and tight. Then do a ohm test from the cable to the terminal to make sure no resistance is at the battery terminals. Even a loose battery cable can cause your clicking and no start issue. Then I would hook up a volt meter and see what voltage the battery has and what voltage it drops to as try to crank the engine. If it falls below 10v then I would try to replace the battery. If the battery is good then you have to look into the starter as that is the last thing you replaced that can cause this. You can energize the solenoid to see if the starter works. Last thing could be the ignition switch.

Its probably the crap battery I got in my car. I just realized its only got like 500 crank amps. I will get that replaced and see what happens...

The new starter I put in was a rebuilt oem i believe, but it made no difference at all when I replaced it, did it before and after.

Only performance mods I have on the car are Upper/Lower ic piping, catback, and a bov. These are the only ones that I know of but they were all installed by the previous owner.

Same issue I've had. When I got my car in March it cranked like a champ every single time. Slowly but surely it started giving me issues cranking little by little to the point I'd have to leave it running if I did quick stops at gas stations and other places. It became totally unreliable. I relocated battery to the trunk and put a optima red top in and replaced my alternator and still didn't fix the problem. Put a reman starter from O'Reilly's in and bam problem solved...for a month. I think heat slowly kills these starters. OEM alternator (not a reman) seems to be the best choice from what I'm told. That will be my next try.

That's what I think it is. With the 115°F+ weather we get here, and the fact that my car has to sit outside 6hrs a day I was afraid the heat was killing it. Let me know if the starter works for you.
