Hi all,
Need help diagnosing this noise. Engine has 109,000 miles. A lifter maybe ? Compression tested and between 170 and 180 across all 4 cylinders, so no issues there.

- Accessory belt is off. Sound is definitely from the engine
- Crankshaft inspected - no wear at all, rod bearings replaced.
- Lifters replaced.
- Turbo was blown and it looks like it sent some bits into the engine, I found some aluminum bits/dust in the oil pan.

Dont know the backstory on the car, I bought it with the noise.

 

Yeah, certainly does not sound right. Stock cams & springs?

One of those mechanics stethoscopes may help in pinpoint that tick?

 

Dont know the history of the motor. Just picked it up as is with the noise and all. Sounds like lifters but very loud.

When it's that loud, I'd grab a mechanic's stethoscope and listen on the block for rod knock. Does the noise increase in frequency as you rev higher?

 

Thanks, that's what I'm leaning toward. Yes the noise increases in frequency as I rev higher. I'll probably just swap in a new block.

Timing belt tensioner probably has play

 

Do you have pictures of crank and rods?

My mom's V6 2014 Mustang has had a quieter version of this for years now. Even a few Ford dealers had no luck. Yours sounds more like a bolt is loose and my mom's more like a cam or something.
