Looking for an OEM-style flywheel

I have been really trying to track down the noises and rattles on my evo 9 MR. I am pretty sure one of the frequent noises I hear is chattering due to a light wheel flywheel that the previous owner installed. He said 20k miles ago a Competition clutch 5152-0100 and flywheel 2-645-STU were installed. I would really like to just put a regular style flywheel/clutch back on but I am having issues tracking down a flywheel replacement. I think I may have found the part number, MD373136. But I am not 100% certain about it. Does anyone know if there are any differences between the 8/9's or the 5/6 speeds? Also if I go for an aftermarket, does anyone have any recommendations on a non-lightened flywheel?

Thanks

Hi, I recently ran into this issue, as Mitsubishi USA told me these were discontinued. However, it is available elsewhere in the world. I used the flywheel part number you listed without issue in my evo 8 5 speed non-mr and had the Mitsubishi dealership install. I would contact the dealership parts department and see if there is a difference in part numbers.

I ordered from Amayama for roughly $580 with shipping. You might have luck there finding the right part number and availability.

With a single plate clutch most of the noise you hear is from the TOB or the gears / bearings in the trans.
If you hear a rattle at idle with the car warmed up, then press in the clutch. If the sound stops it is due to trans / TOB.
I have the Exedy LW flywheel, also SFI certified, so less likely to explode compared to the OEM flywheel.
Light flywheel is a performance advantage and for about $40 you can have it resurfaced. If it is holding I would leave it and the clutch alone.

As mitsuatb said, it likely isn't the flywheel causing the noise, its probably the throwout bearing. I'd check as he stated and you'll then know where the noise is coming from.

That said, I am pretty sure I have the stock flywheel off my 9 mr if you are still looking to buy one. PM me if you are interested and I can take a look.

The noise seems to be coming from inside the transmission. It is very faint when outside the car but pretty obnoxious from the inside. Pressing the clutch pedal in seems to not affect it. Right now the car has a pretty rough idle when cold and it is pretty noticeable when idling. Sounds kind of like someone is softly tapping metal poles together. I just purchased some trans fluid from the Mitsubishi dealer, I am going to try to get that changed in the next few days.

Sadly it sounds like you may have something wrong internal to the trans then. You can try a fluid change but it probably needs to come out and get looked over.

With the clutch in the trans is not turning. So noise is likely from the TOB or accessories, Do a cold start with the serpentine belt removed. Do not run it for more than a few minutes since this disconnects water pump drive. If noise continues with belt off and clutch in it is the TOB or an internal engine problem.

If noise stops with belt off it is an accessory problem ie water pump P/S alt A/C idlers tensioner.

Thank you for the replies so far. I think I am just doing a bad job of explaining the noise. I think the pipes comment I made it sound a little extreme. To me it sounds like some kind of suspension rattle. I only really hear it when the engine is idling rough or in-between shifts. It doesn't seem that audible from the outside. At idle, pushing the clutch in and out and shifting gears doesn't seem to affect it. The front motor mount was aftermarket and it was just replaced with an OEM part. The other 3 look original but in good condition. I don't think anything is wrong with the transmission unless something internally is rattling but I do not notice any drivability issues. Since it happens on a cold start I will try to get a video of it.

Here is a quick video that shows the noise at idle. It is louder when actually driving but it's the same noise.

Here is another while driving. Sorry for the bad camera work.
