Yeah, there's a bit of misinformation out there with the turbos.. some good sources say it is not titanium shaft, others say it is.. since I already have a complete turbo, I'm not inclined to take it apart far enough to be able to see that part and verify which it is..

Couldn't you just stick a strong magnet on the shaft and see if it is steel or titanium? Steel is magnetic and titanium isn't?

Yep, its possible, but there are other metals used for shafts that are nonferrous so its easy to mistake.. Its not important to me, actually its the large wheel that has the biggest effect on rotating mass, and hence spool..

At this point, anyone working with modifying a stock turbo, or using an upgraded or hybrid stock style turbo is experimenting, so nobody's really certain what the results would be.. With a smaller turbo, power is even more about the combination of parts you choose.. For me, It will be good head work, and additional displacement (2.3 or 2.4 liter stroker short block) and getting as much air into and out of the engine with the lowest restrictions.. In other words, making similar optimizations that you would make for an NA engine..

It certainly may not be the cheapest way to go, but I'll gamble that its probably going to make similar power to any other option, with much better drivability.

I actually think I would like the 9.8 in titanium. Anybody know where to purchase a rebuilt one?

MalibuJack, do you think the stock turbo will not run out of steam on a 2.3ltr strocker? i ask because Ralliart offer a 2.3 ltr strocker for stock EVOs over here and they only get 340bhp out of them! i personal think that you will be pushing the stock turbo beond its limits if you want any decent kind of boost. and what about back presure from the (relativley for the engine size) small exhaust housing? what are your thoughts???

have you thought about increasing your comp. ratio? this will give you more torque acroos the whole ranage and give you bettter driveability!

apart from that it seams as though you will have a cool set up. my only concern, as already said is the strocker!

thanks Chris.

I also was wondering if you could raise the compression ratio a little bit when using the stock turbo on a stroker motor. Maybe 9.0:1 or so?

Higher compression ratio will give you better off-boost power and better gas mileage, but will limit the amount of boost you can run on pump gas.

It will also mean less boost is necessary to make the same numbers since it is the dynamic compression ratio (a function of static compression and boost pressure) rather than boost pressure alone that determines air flow through the engine.

Good point, but I don't think it will run out of steam, slightly lower rev limit possibly, but the low RPM torque and overall gains from a larger displacement definitely outweighs it.. I think improving the efficiency of the intake tract, manifold, head, will make it easier to overcome the limitations of the 10.5 Titanium turbo.. I think the stock turbo would run out of steam regardless of displacement though unless you can do things to make sure it doesn't have to work as hard.
