Gotta agree, thread could go forever. The question is beguiling because its inherently existential. In terms of value for the street, an '05 Honda Odyssey is way ahead of any EVO. It's all you need and does everything better. Not a cop magnet, hauls more people, hauls more stuff, more comfortable, better street engine, cheaper insurance, the list goes on. For the track, you can have just as much fun in a vehicle way cheaper.

Simple. 70+ % of the people on this board will never track their cars, will never even get close to the potential of them. It's simply a matter of taste, pride of ownership, etc. Objectively you can take 8000.00 and put it into a new SRT-4, and have a car that will destroy an MR on the track. I've seen one. There was a guy at Buttonwillow running in the NASA HPDE time trial group 4 that was KILLING everyone in a highly modded SRT-4. He was a hell of a driver as well. This issue of "what car is better" regardless of the car in question is completely played out. There are too many variables to consider in such an analysis.

That's not really a like for like comparison is it? Getting an even cheaper car than the SRT-4 and pumping in 8K+ will likely achieve similar results (more so in a straight line, unlikely around the twisties). The vaule difference between the EVO and SRT-4 isn't that great! Remember the SRT-4 is FWD, SRT-4 is not 2.0L. Pumping in 8K into any evo will likely kill any SRT-4 modded with silimar cost budget. Especially true if it's the same driver time trialing both cars.

But your point on bang for buck out of SRT-4 is well known already...

Not true, how can you say that? The $8K can go a lot farther for producing power in the SRT-4 than in the EVO. Sure, the EVO is a more refined, AWD, high performance car, but there is absolutely no certainty that any given EVO with $8K worth of mods will kill any given SRT-4 with $8K worth of mods. Not in the dragstrip and quite possibly not in a track either. I've had an EVO with over$8K mods in it and it sure as hell could not kill any STR-4 with $8k worth of mods....... There is just too many factors that go into something like this. What mods, who does the mods, who tunes, who drives, etc.

The 03 was lacking LSD and some performance improvements that the 05 GSR will share with the MR.

I prefer a 5 speed for autocross because it will tend to hold 2nd gear just a little longer and maybe avoid having to shift up and back in some places.

Is'nt it likely that the 05 GSR is alot closer to the MR than the 03 GSR?

Plus 5 seconds diference?! - might your driving skills be a big factor as well here?!
again, WHen autocrossing you rarely have to shift to third gear. In second gear I ended up with 62 to 63 miles per hour which to me is more than enough. I was getting 58 mph with my old sti and that extra 5mph makes a hell of a difference.

I have driven both the EVO VIII and the MR edition. Both are nice vehicles but the MR is worth every penny IMO if only for the 6 speed and the active center diff. It makes the price tag worth it too i would rather pay that for a true evo instead of the regular evo that is much more like an over priced, slightly more powerful Eclipse.

How do you figure that the VIII is like an Eclipse? It sounds like your talking out of your ***.

EVO=Eclipse??? I don't think so. Do you have any idea of what you are talking about? The EVO 8 is the same car car as the MR and RS with some different components. They share the same body (except the MR alum roof), the same engine and for all intents and purposes the same drive train (except for the MR's 6 speed tranny and ACD) the only other significant difference is the MR's Bilsteins and BBS wheels. The Eclipse is a totally different car.

all 05 model comes with ACD.. not just the MR... is that 6sp worth the extra 6 grand?? well if that 6sp is stronger than the 5sp.. then yes its worth it.. but if its the same strength then no...

The MR is more than a '05 GSR with a 6 speed. These are really different cars. Sure, you could take a GSR and modify it 'till you get the equivalent (although the aluminum roof might be quite impractical to duplicate) of the MR, but what's the point of that? It's hella cheaper and better to buy the MR to begin with..... Of course, you might not want an MR, in which case the whole argument is moot....

is this mostly a money issue and how fast ur 03 04 or 05 non MR could be at the MR pricetag? If ur thinking of it that way, how about a Camaro SS/Z28, isnt that way cheaper than a MR and wouldnt it spank it stock or if u spent the extra thousands to get it up to the MR pricetag, i think it could leave the MR waaay behind.

I just bought my 05 Base Evo and had a chance to get the MR, but i really couldn't justify it for just a 6spd, and AL roof because i'm swaping the wheels, headlights (Hid version), suspension and adding the vortex generator with aftermarket parts even if i had the MR so it definately was not worth the 5k price hike.

I had an 04 evo8 and have now purchased an MR. I think the ride of MR is much better. I also like the extra gear on the highway. I use mine as a daily driver and have no intentions of making any modifications. The average Joe doesnt know the difference between a standard lancer and the evo so I think spending the extra money was a question of being worth it to me, which it was. Lets face it, rarely is buying a new car of any kind a good investment. I bought the wifes Odyssey because we needed it, I bought the MR because I wanted it!!!

'05 Evo VIII vs '05 MR

In my opinion, the Evo 8 is just as good as the MR. I have an '05 Evo VIII with fewer mods than my buddies MR. We raced two nights already and I beat him from 30 to about 115, and beat him really good...the first night i smoked him, it wasnt even a race, then he put a new blow off valve on that hell the boost better. Im running just the same, if not more boost than his. My 2nd gear and 3rd gear rip his apart. I have nothing against the MR, cause it is definitely a tight car. My Evo VIII however is pretty damn tight as well, and i have yet to lose to other evo drivers. The MR is only going to be better at speeds exceeding 115, but the excitement is getting up to 100 really quickly in my opinion anyways.
