Suspension clunk
i had the same problem around 7K and i regularly went to Mitsubishi, but every time they tested the car around they just thought i was crazy because they never heard a clunk. Finally, a few months later the clunk got so noticeable so i brought it into Mitsubishi and they heard it and checked it out and the problem was the bushings (mainly in the front). They replaced it and i haven't had a problem since. If you don't have any aftermarket suspension then bring it in. Tell them to check out the bushings on the front suspension and they may see the problem and fix it. Hope this helps, even though it's a repost.
Interesting, I stumbled upon this thread after I grew sick of listening to the clunk from the front end of the car. yesterday, I ripped off both front wheels and was not going to quit poking around until I found the source of the noise. Here are my conclusions:
1. It is the spring moving around in the lower spring perch.
Reason I say this is because when I looked into the "cup" of the lower spring perch, where the spring seats against the strut, I could see witness marks where the spring would "rotate" slightly in the spring perch. There was a lot of sand and crap in the "cup" of the perchas well, and you could tell that the sand would cause the spring to "bind up" a little bit (Keeping it from rotating freely in the perch, even though it really isn''t "suppost" to.) and then when it broke free, it would move a little less than 1/4 inch, and hance, cause the clunk sound from the front. Both sides of the car on the front shock/spring assembly showed the same characteristic witness marks of the spring "rotating" in the seat.
Keep in mind that the spring moving a little isn't going to hurt anything, it just makes that annoying clunk sound and shifts slightly.
I could imagine that if you were to take a piece of real tough say 1/16" thick rubber sheeting and cut it to fit in the bottom of the spring perch, it might make the noise go away. At least it would keep the spring from "rotating" in the perch.
I tried to take a picture of it and the witness marks but my camera physically wouldn't fit up in there to take a picture.

Hmmm, interesting. I looked at my bushings, but all seemed well.
I have had this clunk on my 03 in the right front since day one. It does it at slow speeds over speedbumps and some turns....had it in the dealership 3 times for it claimed it was fixed but still makes the noise. doesnt hurt nething but something i guess i have to live with...

lol, I was just thinking about this a couple days ago. Back when I bought my evo, I always had the clunk and I there were threads about it on here all the time. It seemed like every evo had it. This is the first thread I have seen about it in a long time. My clunk disappeared with age and I was guessing it was the same way with everyone else since I hadnt heard anything for a while.
old forum, but i too have this clunk. Except mine i can hear it when i get on the throttle and then let go. My front suspension feels very weak and loose anyway, I'll be looking for new suspension set up. Pretty sad that my Bilsteins are ruined :-(
i just lifted my car up and checked where this clunking noise was coming from and found out that i have some play in the passenger side axle. i'm thinking this is causing this noise. checkied for wheel bearings and bushings and all seemed fine. replaced front sway bar links and it reduced the noise but not all of it. there seems to be some play on the spindle side and when you rock the axle, it knocks. replacing axle soon will update this if the problem is solved.
