Thumbs down Car and Driver EVO 8 Test Figures!

Has anyone here seen the Car and Driver article on the Evo?

On another board someone said they received both the Road and Track and Car and Driver in the mail at the same time (I only got R&T) and posted these numbers from C&D for the EVO.

If this is what C&D actually reported, I think we now know that C&D employs our grandparents to test drive cars for them!!!

I could only imagine how horrible the 60ft time was on the 14.2 @ 98 run in a 271hp Evolution!!! Can you say launch at idle????

I can't remember which car mag tested the 215hp/245lbs Dodge Neon SRT-4 FWD to run 14.2 @ 102, but obviously C&D blows when it comes to testing because there is no way that the SRT-4 and EVO run the same 1/4 times!!!

doesn't it say "estimated"? C&D has come up with some pretty low drag racing #'s lately. They got the Cobra Mustang in the 12.9 and the WRX at 14.1, so I am guessing this was not a "real test".

C&D has some of the most accurate 0-60 & 1/4 mile times. This # dosen't suprise me at all. Everyone had there hopes up for this car to be under the 5 second mark, but that was just not going to happen with the added weight and restricted HP. I'm I dissapointed? Yup. Surprised? Nope.

So the guy couldn't estimate

They probably though the evo was a RWD car like the 350Z. Or maybe they thought it was FWD like SRT-4.

Road and Track recorded actual 0 to 60 of 5.1 seconds. And that was with a 6000 RPM clutch dump! You can do that with a rear wheel drive car all day long, but do it all wheel drive and you'r tranny will be toast in no time. Disappointing numbers for a car with so much hype. I guess the extra weight really hurt the performance. If you think about it, this car has almost the same power to weight ratio as the g35 sedan.

Yes,the article says they drove the Evo in Thailand but did not record any times. The numbers they are quoting are"estimated"times.
On that note, they usually are not afraid to really drop the clutch to record a fast time.I spoke to a guy that was at C/D's drag test of the Type R.He said they did like 50 passes before they posted their quickest time.

The way that C&D came up with those numbers is IDIOTIC! They assumed, that the Evo8 had 5 more hp less than the 6 they tested and that it weighed 300lbs more, so they figured the times based off of that.

That sounds like some of the insane assaine assumptions that I've heard mentioned on this forum already. People (C&D idiots), have you ever heard next generation technology? You can't compare like that.

I dunno what to think... I was one of the many here who would refuse to believe any propaganda about the evo, good or bad, and figured the magazine tests would settle all arguments.. well, here they are, and here we are with new arguments... still not sure what to think or believe.

I got the C&D in the mail yesterday. Car and Driver is very accurate and they push the cars to their limits.

Today, I ordered a 2003 Ford SVT Cobra in sonic blue.

Goodbye, Mitsubishi.

Hey mike,

I saw you posting on the svt board about getting a cobra.

I am debating a cobra as well, but may wait a while. I would want to modify it and those stories are scary on there!

Congrats! I can NOT say that you are making a bad decision because in my mind, the 03 Cobra is running third place behind the close run between the EVO and STi!!!

If you rev it and launch a Cobra properly, you can reach 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds in STOCK trim. The horsepower is underrated, it is more than 390. Then, change the SC pulley and get a diablo chip, then add exhaust - intake - throttle body. We're talking well over 600 HP for under $2000 in parts. I'll be keeping mine stock for a while. It also has a independent rear suspension, it handles great.

I am getting my Cobra for under invoice price via my x-plan pricing because my company constructs Ford plants. We haven't started the Mitsu project yet, so no discounts yet! Besides, I'm sick of the dealers dicking me around. Max Madsen finally pissed me off, so I went across the street and told them my situation. They had me test drive a Cobra and it was a life changing experience
