Angry Got reeled in by an STi....

This morning I was driving to work and the traffic was unusually confused and heavy. I was just minding my business and waiting for a chance to pass some very slow traffic in the fast lane ..... I saw a silver STi from the corner of my eye and he was jockeying into position to pass also (as were several other cars).
Anyway, I got my chance to pass the traffic and went by the slowpoke. The STi was right on my back bumper, so I decide to see if I could pull away...... I stepped on the pedal (I was in sixth) and accelerated away. Lo and behold, that pesky STi did not disappear in my rearview mirror, but stayed right there with me .....
I don't know if he down shifted or if his car was particularly powerful or modified, or whatever. I know my car puts down pretty good power on a DD dyno. Granted, I did not downshift but just hit the pedal from cruising (around 55mph). Still, that doggone STi was just not getting dropped...... I wonder if the results had been different had downshifted.... Oh well, live and learn

this thread pisses me off, ok, a car almost as fast as you (considering u modified) and you dont shift down??? u stay in cruise gear and just push in the pedal? i meen thats what i do to get away from annoying civics n stuff but when its another car in your class you dont just stay in cruise gear and expect to lose him...

I don't have sixth gear, but downshifting would have been helpful.

Dude, why jump on my case? Normally when I'm in the interstate I just press the pedal down to accelerate.... That's often quite enough for the majority of cars out there. Also, I was not really racing, I don't like to do that kind of stuff in the public roads, accelerating in the EVO in 6th will get you into the triple digits way too fast anyway....... Besides, if you read in these forums, ppl are always thrashing the STis as being slow, etc....... Apparently they are not such slow boats

If he just kept up with you, how is that reeling in your MR? Doesn't he have to catch up and then pass you?

Undoubtedly, the STi owner wanted to show you up and made the right decision to downshift. Sorry man, but I would have kept that story to myself to save the embarassment. Modded or not, you don't want to take the chance and sleep on any car, especially your arch rival. Try 3rd (if starting under 80) next time.

Sorry to say, but I have to agree with above your an idiot for not down shifting. There is no way the other driver can tell if you down shifted or not.

Well, normally I just pull away from other cars. Any car that stays right there, does not get dropped and actually appears to get closer would be reeling me in.... Of course, I let up on the pedal as the traffic that was waaaay ahead suddenly became an obstacle.... He did go around to another lane and accelerated away as I was busy slowing down to keep prudent distance from the cars in front... Anyway, I did not really try to "race" him. I just tried to pull away and did not succeed. When the speeds get very high (which happens extremely quickly in my car) I don't like to take stupid chances so I just slow down. A few seconds is all it takes for me to determine what's going on...

Definately should have downshifted if you really wanted to test him.
I'm not surprised one bit he kept up with you, since you really weren't trying to outrun him.

No need to think you got beat or anything
