I got pulled over for doing nothing in SoCal. The cop came up with a bogus reason - said my plates were tied to an address that belonged to a person with a warrant. Yeah maybe the little old lady that I bought my house from? I don't think so. Then they asked me if my exhaust was stock. (It is, for now) I think Evos get unwanted attention. I never got pulled over in my Mustang Cobra and I drove it for years. The cops just seem to have it in for the imports.

Hardly...

From http://forums.officer.com/forums/arc...p/t-34542.html

"In Santa Fe Springs, for example, twelve officers on Drag-Net duty issued 300 citations and impounded 50 vehicles in just one weekend. Several cities have drag-racing ordinances that allow police to auction off seized cars and keep the profits"

(I somhow doubt they're smog legal when they're sold to new owners)

"Under Drag-Net, San Diego officers come to train other departments how to look out for what they believe to be tell-tale signs of illegal modification such as window tinting, large spoilers, extra gauges or racing stickers. Police say this gives them probable cause to stop and inspect a vehicle and its engine compartment.

In practice, "excessive exaust noise" tickets are the most common violation. California law does not require police to measure sound levels objectively. Instead, according to the Calfiornia Highway Patrol, the "citation is based on officer's judgment."

"Drivers of stock vehicles that come from the factory with some of the characteristics of modified cars have experienced harassment under this provision."

"My friend went to court for a modified exhaust that was leagal he showed the the papers for the exhaust stating it met california regulations. The judge told him that he didnt care what the papers said that anything done after market to the vehicle was illegal."

(the next two are from the same writer and I assume is a member of law enfourcement)

"It is illegal to modify a working exhaust system on a newer car, even with any carb information. Just because it meets the smog laws, it doesnt nullify the law that prohibits tampering with a working exhaust. "

"Well most of the stuff is illegal, even though its not explicitly stated in any of the aforementioned laws (WTF???). Their is case law to take into consideration along with interpretation. Alot of the stuff has good reasoning behind it like tint (LEO cant see you behind it) mufflers (just friggin annoying). The turbos would probably be illegal because they increase the air pollutants released, which is against the law. I cant find the specific law about modifying exhaust, but its a tricky law that isnt a cvc violation. Its some business operations type law or something, ill have to call around but I know a few people that were fined around $2000 for it. I can understand peoples frustration with it, but its on the public agenda because of all the recent deaths related to street racing."

You seem like a nice guy and I would hope that you're the one pulling me over but your wrong. The entire program is designed to harass "modified vehicle" owners.

The vehicle code does not overshadow the consitutional protection from warrantless searches.

There's more if you want to read it...

I'm sure it happened. Remember cops are hired from the general public not from some super genetically enhanced race of super people. We have our bad apples just like every subculture in society.

The cities who "crack down" on "street racers" have experienced an overwhelming increase in traffic related deaths, deaths in innocent pedestrians, and deaths in young teenagers. The money obtained from the state or local governments used to combat the rise in deaths is usually due to public outcry. We are "public servants" afterall. The laws we enforce were written by the public. We can't just take the money and use it for gang enforcement. It has to go to whatever it was intended for. Think of MADD for example. The organization has a lot of pull in society. If they give us money to enforce the avoid the 13 campeign against drunk drivers, guess what....that is where we have to use it (dui checkpoints). Nothing personal, just politics.

what do you mean, cops are human? i'm sure being pulled over for things like that has happened to most of us, the 2 things i have noticed are one, just like in boot camp dont get noticed or give them an excuse to really shaft you and they wont, or 2 you get the unluck of the draw and get the cop thats haveing a bad day or is just a dick, either way its a situation i(and most of you) have to deal with untill certain mod become legal or illegal. personally i'm gonna sleeper the he!! out of my car and garage it, when i get a bucket car in a few months.

I'm ok with the "cracking down" on the racing part. It's the "you look like street racer" assumed guilt thing that's a little wacked.

The reality is that if anybody had the money to fight this in court none of it would stand in the end but this is all predicated on the assumption that the poor kids who have to deal with this crap will just bend over.

For those of us in California who think we have it bad, start a new forum about bad cop experiences and see how many of them come from out of state. I am sure some other nameless states are much worse than us. Not a defense, just pointing out the obvious. Our carb exemptions are a pain in the a$$ but there are other benefits.

I'll say that most of us subscribe to the duck theory. If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it's probably a duck. That said, it usually applies to the guy with the tattoos of "cop killa, XIV, puro norte, teardrop under the eye, etc" not to people driving cars. Obviously some will take it too far.

That said, I don't think that "racers" kill people....it's the act of illegal street racing that does. So the duck theory does not really apply. It's the driving characteristics of the person. A person does not have to be driving in a "rice rocket" to be racing. I've seen plenty of idiots doing just fine in old beaters.

I'll end my posts with my favorite quote, "Guns don't kill people, guys who come home early from work to see their wives kill people". In other words, it's not the car, it's the driver.

Street racing? Maybe catching people in the act is an old fashined idea in this era of preemptive wars and now Californias Pre-crime initiative.
