IX Steering Column Loose As A Goose

As the title states.... Its very loose, I can move the wheel side to side(Abour 1.5 inches) and now alittle up and down. Looks like the bracket closest to the wheel the Column sits in is the issue, I think there is two 10mm's that tighten that area. From some forum searching it seems as thought this has happend to a few folks. Anyone have insight or input on this matter I would appreciate it.

Thanks

take a peak under the dash at the column, anything lose? Tighten it.
Tap on some of the metallic parts and see.

Have you had an accident with the car? There is a mechanism that activates (if you crash into something) in the steering column that can cause it to be slack. If this is the case, you will need to replace the steering column.

PM me if you need more info on the column - stuff like assembly diagrams and such.

And there's a number of bolts there. The most important ones are 'Special bolts' which need to be drilled out... not fun.

There is one screw under the column that connects the top and bottom panels. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN IT!!! If you do when putting it back together, it causes uneven pressure and the two pieces will be loose and not connect properly. Screw it in just enough so its snug and everything will be fine

Thanks for the help fella's ...... I took apart everything... Studyed it, found the flaw in the design. I am sure this wont happen often to people. But in short if you had your Column cover off and you see the two 12mm bolts one on the left side and one on the right. These bolts merly hold up the two brackets hold the wheel up..... Now these two little brackets, one left one right... Are held on by, are you guys read for this. some sort of injection GLUE four micro spots(almost like welds) on each. So if you jar the wheel hard enough you break these little glue spots.... Thus starts a chain reaction and you wheel will slowy loosen and eventually fall in your lap. Its a very poor design, It should be one piece. But never the less, I fixed it.

I am not so great with words, do if you have further questions I can try to explain better.

Thanks

That would be the 'mechanism' I was talking about. If you crash the car, the four spots will break off so you don't bugger up your hands. It's cheaper than the ones in European cars that actally retracts the steering wheel.

Mitsu says you have to replace the steering column which is a littl ghay...

it's not necessarily a flaw, more of an inexpensive safety thing.

I currently have this problem and its annoying as f**k. I see the 2 small aluminum colored bracket hinge things on the left and right of the steering shaft. Ive tried to tighten them down alot and there is still alot of play. I dont see how gluing these brackets to the metal structure fixes the problem but I certainly see that if it were welded it could permanently fix the issue. Unfortunately I live in New York ****ty so at the moment I cannot do this. Anyone else have a solution?
