So i test drove an S2k today.... (it was nice, but still havn't drivin an evo... i know i know im on the f-in evo forum, im just trying to do some research.... please dont bash on me, im nice.....)
my friend has a nice RSX-type s and he pretty much races it 24/7 (pretty much, he is always pissed off cause he is pretty much an emo...) and his warranty is still covered.
the s2k has the same warranty, and i was wondering if the evo can compete with it? has anyone had any crap from the dealer for racing? can they track it through the ecu or do they just see through general ware...

Warranty work at the dealership (wing and clutch info)

Well I thought I'd share a little information I got yesterday from my local dealership where I bought my evo. First off, I wanted to get my wing looked at since the clearcoat was fading. The service manager looked at it for all of about 10 seconds and said "Yep, I can get you a new one." Should be here in two weeks. I was stoked about that since I've heard a lot of people having trouble getting theirs replaced. One thing he said to me was that he's seen a lot of wings where people have used Armorall or something like that on the carbon fiber and doesn't like the heat when it's out in the sun and it basically cooks the clearcoat causing it to chip. He said if mine had chipped I was probably out of luck, but the fading is something they will warranty.

Also we got talking about my clutch since he was absolutely amazed that I'm still on the factory clutch with 50K miles. He said he has seen 1 locally that went 20K, but most come in for a new clutch by 16K. Anyway, we got talking about replacements and if I went aftermarket. He said, there is a very specific procedure Mitsubishi has for removing the clutch for replacement and if I had the work done at another shop they could not know for sure if it was done properly so if I ended up having tranny or t-case issues they would not be covered. BUT, if they did the clutch install at the dealership (even with an aftermarket clutch) the tranny and t-case would still be covered in case of an issue because they would know the proper procedure was followed. I thought that was interesting. They also match the warranty on the aftermarket clutch parts. So if the parts had a 90 day warranty, the service would have the same warranty period.

So, nothing earth-shattering, but some interesting information I thought some of you could use.

That sounds great when he is talking but I would seriously want that kind of information in writing from the service department at the dealership before I would fully believe what they will and will not cover.

Ultimately the district rep will determine to warrenty your trans and tc with an aftermarket clutch.

Meaning that if the dist. rep comes into the dealership while they are working on your car and sees that you have an aftermarket clutch in there and they are working on your trans and tc he may very well deny right then and there your warrenty claim leaving you to pay for the re-assemble of your trans and tc.

I personally would need to have ir-refutable (sp) proof they will cover it before I believe them.

Remember dealership are in business to make as much $$ as possible.

Just my .02

I understand your skepticism, I'm just relaying the information I received. The service manager did tell me that this was all information he received from the district rep.

Little back story.....

I am usually not one to trust dealerships, but I have wanted to hang onto my warranty as long as I can since I got the 10yr/100K mile warranty when I bought my evo in '04. I was clearly concerned about it when I bought the car and the service manager personally oversaw the service done on my car whenever I brought it in. That helped me feel confident enough to allow the dealership to do the work which was free up to 45K miles. About six months ago, the service manager took a job elsewhere and was replaced by a new guy. I was worried again that I would lose the meticulous service arrangement I had been used to. Yesterday was my first time meeting this new service manager and I was impressed with him and he seemed eager to work with me. He has some history with racing so he understands that people want to *use* their evos but he also knows what abuse looks like and will likely not be so easy if he sees evidence of abuse. From what he told me, not long after he took the job as the service manager, a new district rep was put in place for our area and that seems to have helped as well.

I can make no promises as to what they can do for anyone else, but they have been great to me since I bought the car. My car is there today getting the 50K miles service and the service manager is overseeing the work as usual.

Proper Procedure? That just sounds like he is trying to get your money/buisness. There have been many that have had dealers mess up their cars (changing the oil was as far as I was going to let my dealer touch my car - even then I double checked and watched them do it...). And its a clutch install. A good ASE cert. mech. should know how to do the job correctly. What I do for my mech. is bring any information I can for the job. Like the clutch intstall how-to steps from evomoto -- just makes it go smoother for all (but this is a shop that I have used since I have moved to this area, they have worked on all my cars, they know me, my driving, and I know a good amount also about cars in general...so maybe Im just a statistical outlier)

That may very well be true. But for me, who cares? Even if I could have another shop do the work and do it properly, why would I if an issue arose that would no longer be covered under warranty. If I get the same work done at the dealership and they screw it up, they're going to fix it. I'm sorry you don't agree but it makes a lot of sense to me to have them install an aftermarket clutch if it means they're still going to cover my tranny and t-case.

Im not disagreeing, its more of a buyer beware. If you feel comfortable with them, then by all means - its your car.

I think if you're expecting any kind of warranty items to be covered on your car, then you might be setting yourself up for disappointment... just my $.02
