Warranty Issues <Mega Merge>
Hello all,
I am not in service, but I am in sales at a Porsche/Audi/VW dealership. From what interaction I have with service I can tell you that they 110% try to do everything in their power to avoid "Warranty" issues unless you are a highly valued customer to the dealership. The pay rate for the service advisers drops to nothing and the techs are only paid a flat "fee" to repair the warranty issue. Typically they get paid for their time, as most of us would like to. When you're working on something that a customer is not paying for obviously the manufacture will not pay you the same wage you would typically make. Even though you may have a case in saying that your modifications do not affect your transmission the dealer will maintain that ANY modification to the vehicle that enhances performance increases the work load of the transmission which may have led to the failure. No matter how far fetched it seems, logistically they would be correct. Your best bet is having previous paperwork documenting the issue occurring in 4th gear. If you can prove that the issues was there prior to modification then the dealer has no case and will have to fix your vehicle regardless. I wish you luck.
Regards,
Justin.

When it comes to Mitsu if you want ANY sort of warranty work done (UNLESS IT IS A RECALL OR A POSTED SERVICE BULLITEN) do NOT mod your EVO. Mitsu and Subaru are VERY strict when it comes to warranty work on these vehicles because they are "factory tuned" and realize (in most cases) that when the cars are purchased they will not be driven conservatively . Remember...mods=no warranty no mods=warranty. Keep this in mind and your Mitsu ownership experience will be excellent
It doesn't sound like you're the brightest coin in the fountain. Let's get this straight, you have issues with your car's transmission and take it in for warranty work, you get the car back and notice that it still has issues yet you decide to modify it and then take it back in for additional warranty work?? Did you honestly think they were going to pretend to not see the mods you have on there? I'm sorry but you brought the voiding of the warranty onto yourself.
im not an expert in this but with my old evo i had warranty work done to it with a cat back on but my brother who had an eclipse about 5 years ago had cat back on that and they said thats what caused his problem and voided his warranty, both our cars were purchased at the same dealer, so it jsut depends, but you say the guy took pictures of your car, which means nothing, you could have had a "friends car" that you took that day, there is no proof that the car in the pictures is yours unless he took a picture of the vin or the license plate which i doubt he did unless the picture to show the cat-back is from far away and shows the tag, so if now take all the stuff off the car, and go back talk to another person adn say you were in a friends car, you will have to give them hell but there is now possible way they can say that was your car you brought in the day he took the pictures, if i were in your possition thats what i would try.
that's sux this is what i would do,take all the aftermarket part's out and go to another mitsu dealer and told them about you problem,if this doesnt work i suggest you to go to another state and have this car fix,for example i live in jersey but new york and connecticut are not that far away from me this is just an idea i hope everything work's out for you man...

The pay rate only is bad for the dealer if none of their techs are certified with Mistsu. At a dealership where the techs have taken the mitsu tests and passed their certification they get paid top dollar for there work. Now there are cases where they will only pay the tech a allowed amount of time to fix something, if they take longer than that it is their fault. They should of not taken so many smoke breaks and worked harder. I will tell you that most of the dealerships you go to have their techs certified i am sorry you worked for a service department that sucked and was not certified so your pay sucked
Evolutionm.net has a thread devoted to providing answers to warranty issues. Currently it is filed under the "Newbie" section. I think evom should relocate (or copy) that thread to: Lancer Evolution Forums > General. Whatever the case I have linked that thread here. It is research based with specific sections which reference legal documentation. Read it - it will be useful.

Read up and you'll find they are wrong and, by law, must warranty your car especially because of the previous problems.

Hello Tim,
The dealership I bought the car from, was small enough to VOID warranties, just because the valvestem covers on the tires were NOT STOCK!! I was having tranny grinding also! My car looked EXACTLY LIKE THIS:

My original dealership wouldn't warranty it. I took it to a dealership 45 minutes away, walked in, and asked for the service manager, and told him "lets go for a ride". I took him for a ride (without signing in at the counter) and said "do you hear that grind?" he said he could, then I said: "you can tell it has been modded a little bit, and I am aware of a TSB on the tranny", doesnt that mean you HAVE to repair it no matter what? and he said YES. (the did, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!)
I told him to warranty it, and "DON'T FLAG ME!!"(meaning your car is "flagged" in the MAIN Mitshubishi database- for ALL dealers to see) which they do if your car comes in modded, so if you tried to go to another dealership, they would know you are "shopping" for a place to warranty your car. HELL, yours has so LITTLE miles!!! I would defenetly look elsewhere before you have to take it to the next step. I can give you pointers if you need them, let me know, and good luck.

Kevin is right (smoked)
My car had 57k miles with mods, include cams, and piggyback computer and I had the tranny TSB done. Find a new dealer. I had another buddy here get tranny service denied because he had lowering springs.
Find a new dealer. If they flagged your warranty they need to provide you with something saying your warranty has been voided.

Hi Joe.
I'm only speaking from prior experience with a different transmission which I had bent a shift fork in and it behaved similarly.
As for your mods, you pay to play. People on here will chatter endlessly about magnuson or is it magnus moss act and attorneys and what a service advisor told them, and what their buddy did, but at the end of the day you're in the system now with a modded car. Want a warranty? Enjoy your stock car.
You could also drop it back to stock, techs don't know enough to tell if a car has been modded or not. There aren't any signs to show whether it has. . . or something.

as far as dealerships, i currently am a technician at a saturn dealer(lol), and its true that warranty is not the best ticket one can get. you can only get paid straight time or if you found the problem quick, you gotta find the labor op and use whatever time they give you..... however, if i had seen a redline come in with all sorts of mods and his radio is not working, then they should fix it..... but if theres hella mods and your trans is cracked, well i would say its up to the service manager/rep...... a catback and a drop in is pretty cheesy to void warranty but people dont mod their cars just for looks....(unless your a poseur lol).
So how long did your warranty last?
How many miles did you go? did you find it worth it? and im wondering, how many tickets have you gotten before and after you lost your warranty... (assuming you installed something to make your car go VROOM VROOM fasted
)
