The oil gets pretty dirty quickly (dirty as in color). Because it mixes in with the oil from the oil cooler and whatever is left in the lines. You'll be able to see it very clearly soon. However if you look closely you can tell right after the oil change just look for the shiny/wet line it creates. might want to take a flashlight to it.

lets see... u shouldnt be even putting in a full 5 quarts. its quite hard to remove all the oil, some is in the oil cooler and some are in the engine itself. 5.5 is WAY too much. w/ evo (and most cars) u should be starting w/ about 4.5 quarts. ur already at a very safe level (almost 5qts) then tape a dip stick reading. add slightly more to hit full, ur done.

i'll be frank, if u or ur friends cant do an oil change without stripping the drain plug(used open ended wrench?) or putting in the wrong amount, maybe u should have a friend who DOES know cars to teach ALL of you guys.

17mm worked perfect on the drain plug. got it off easy and made sure not to overtighten it when i put it back on, i dont have a torque wrench. anyway you were right about the oil dirtying up a little. i drove a short distance last night and it mixed with oil still left in the lines. this morning while cold, i took that dip stick out and could see plain as day. the line came right up to the second (full) notch on the dipstick, and that was just over 4.5, maybe 4.75 quarts. looks like i guessed right. no big deal to add some if i had to, just didnt want to drain, it would be a pain in the ****. anyway thanks guys.
