Daily Driver - EVO9 or 01 S4?
i got an evo8. my roommate drives an o1 s4. the s4 is way classier even though its so much older. great car. expensive problems and expensive parts. but i fyou dont plan on modding more than what the audi already has, then go with the audi. its quiet comfy and fast.
Well, I got rid of my Audi TT Quattro 2003 w/ a chipped ecu for a Evo IX. Any driving purist will offer immediate respect, while the older business like will just be in a state of confusion. I work in an office building and I am subject to this on the regular. My brother had a 2001 S4 and I drove it plenty of times. The Audi is a GREAT car, please don't get me wrong, BUT the rush you get driving an Evo is unparallel. If you are a driving purist get the freaking Evo, although if you think you'll miss the luxury accents of a German car; the S4 is for you. I highly agree with taking the wing off and not loading the car up with carbon fiber. There are instances I feel too old for the car (I'm 26). OH! More importantly, I got a lot more action from the ladies in the TT...
wow 1900 for lease? im paying only 1/4 for my evo (purchase).
s4 smooth awd turbo charged luxurious car.
Evo 9 other hand is loud and not smooth ride. But people will look at you if you drive evo around. Also i love the how evo drives and handles.
how old are you? I'm 25 and im not ready to drive bmw lexus mbz like businessman.
Armyboy =) loves evo. I saw 6 different evos just in my base

I'm 42 and a certified car nut. I just recently bought a used WW 2005 EVO VIII and It's a blast. The EVO is my 51st car to date. I bought the exact Audi you are referring to new back in 2001. It was a great car. A Grand Tourer. A good blend between luxury and sport. Quite and roomy but able to fly on the highway. Very refined. Much better IMHO than a Mercedes or BWM (I've owned several of both) but not as high on the status scale. If image is what your are looking for the Audi is much more 'low-key' than it's German rivals. I had an MTM ECU and exhaust from Stratmosphere and it really woke up the twin turbo V6. Everything you would ever want to know can be found on the Audiworld forums.
As stated above, the EVO driving experience CRUSHES the S4. Much more raw. Total sensorary overload. The grin factor, both yours and your passengers, will tell you the difference. Make performace mods but keep the exterior and interior mods sanitary and tasteful.
Anyone of your coworkers who knows about the EVO will understand why you picked the EVO. Any coworker who doesn't know about the EVO will understand after their first drive with you.

well if somebody ask you this is an eclipse.. for me its a little strech.
Lets face it:
the Evo vs Lancer is from out side day and night, period.
The S4 vs A4 from out side is way more simular.
i didn't thougt we going to argue there.
just put those cars next to each other.
Evo - lancer - eclipse
A4 - S4

The differences between the Evo and Lancer to you are as apparent as the differences between the A4 and S4 to me. However the newer models are looking more and more alike. Same with the new Lancer and Evo X.
You are forgetting that most of the population cannot drive stick (or even automatic, especially on a cell phone
), let alone identify the differences between the Lancer and Lancer Evo, an obscure line of cars to most. My own mother thought my buddy (who had an A4 in the same color as mine) owned an S4 as well and was surpised when I told her it wasn't. I'm not sure if were arguing the same thing or different

GIAC would have really taken you for a ride compared to the smooth MTM you had.
Driving the S4 when I did so on a regular basis was incredible, I couldn't imagine a better car. Now, compared to the Evo, it is mundane and boring. Quite a wake up call for me, every car I own from now on will be compared to the Evo. It's hard to put into words, just drive them (back to back if possible).
Seems like there are a bunch of former S4 owners on evom; me being one of them.
Somebody mentioned the S4 as being a "monster."
It can be pretty fast with the upgraded K04's but it's hardly a monster.
Remember that the K04's are still very small turbos which I believe was used in the 1.8 225 HP Audi TT's.
Big power comes from the hybrid K16's/K04's (a mix and match of compressor housings; from which I forget). The K16's are the Porsche 996 body style 911 Turbo turbos.
Only recently have there been (I believe 2 or 3) S4's with the Garrett GT28 turbos in them.
All in all very expensive.
S4 is a good daily driver, but the back seats are really tight, and yes the car does seem to have electrical gremlins (my heat seaters were stuck on the highest level and my CEL was on all the time despite having no codes).
Here are some pics of my old S4:

My Evo is three-and-a-half years old now. People still ask me "Why are you driving around in THAT?". I might get it more than most, cause I'm 55 and have plenty of salt-and-pepper in the hair.
Anyway if you want the answer to your question about Audi vs Evo, you have to look in the mirror and ask yourself one question:
"Do you care what other people think??? (now make your upper lip curl into a rictus of contempt like Dirty Harry)...Well, do ya??... punk?"
Make the right choice, man!

Now they are fast, but trust me buddy I do have the slightEST idea what they are capable of. How many are running 8.56 @ 156? No one has even run a 10 second pass yet to the best of my knowledge (a stripped K04 car, 2800 lbs, ran 11.0). The GT cars were runnning high 11's and low 12's with good trap speeds (128-130) at a slow track (LACR IIRC)
They are heavy pigs of a car and they have been out for 3 years longer than the Evo (although the 4G63 has been out longer) but there has been plenty of time. A GT car may be a beast on the highway, but not without running way beyond the limits of saftey. They are not good for 1/4 or track, but lets not get ahead of ourselves frenchy. The OP asked about DD, not modding it to the fullest.
Sure do. The fastest customer car from ASP made 630 whp on C16 with no exhaust, and there is a WMS car that made around 700 whp but promptly blew up (the ASP car has had a plethora of problems as well)

I had both... Yes the Evo is faster at every mod level, but by far the BIGGEST difference between the cars is the handling. The Audi is ridiculously porky and pushes VERY hard, imho because of the forward engine position. I sold the Audi after 4 years of ownership and I would NEVER trade in the Evo for one.
The S4 isn't a driver's car. The Evo is.
