Evo 8 or srt-4 ?
I was on the same boat, srt-4 or evo? Little less for the dodge, but you will run in to more mechanical problems compared to the evo. Like my father always said about cars, "you can spend a little less now, or a lot more later". The handling, the looks, the history of the srt-4 is nothing close to the evo. I am happy i spend a little more, besides, Its a neon!
I would go with the SRT4, The only problem I've had with mine was the Intake manifold gasket went that was around 50k. 20 min fix. Mechanically... No issues what so ever. The car is VERY cheap to mod, responds very well to simple bolt on's. The engine can handle about low 500 WHP, stock internals.
I would say EVO4EVER! neon NO my friend used to have one was quick not bad for the price but he had so many problems with it all the time I have mine is a viii with 56000 no problems at all since I bought it on 2003 0 miles tho and would never sell it for 20K no way I would do that! good luck with ur decision!
If your looking for cheap effective turbo charged power then will thats what the srt4 was designed for . To be the fastest stocker under 20k. Me and my cousin own both i put down 15k brand new and still owe around 20 he put down nothing and owes 18 I myself wouldn't drive an srt just not my style. I prefer awd over fwd and that to me besides styling is the biggest difference.
a buddy of mine owns a stage 2 srt yeah its quick and everything, but the handeling alone is not worth sacrificing, also it has really bad wheel hop. and the evo handles like its on rails. but in the end i hope your happy with what decision you came to evo or srt youll be going pretty quick
With the srt-4 I had a .50 trim turbo kit and at 2,970 lbs it was pretty quick. If you want the quick and cheap way to go fast get the srt-4. Parts are cheap, and pretty much a steal compared to the Evo parts. But remember it will be fast and front wheel drive. How important to you is being correct wheel drive for a fast car?
I do like the srt-4 but honostly since I have a choice I wouldnt go back. I much rather be a slower evo IX 320 whp vs 360 whp .50 trim srt-4. Handling in an EVO is just ****ing crazy compared to an srt-4 (stock for stock). I like how the srt-4 looks but the Evo visually is my favorite car even comparing to most exotic super cars.
I'd save money untill you have a good downpayment to keep the payments lower and get an EVO. But if saving is not possible or money is too tight for comfort zone then srt-4 will very much make you happy. Just make sure you get 2004 or newer srt-4.
It really depends. Obviously your budget will probably make the SRT-4 a better choice, but like a lot of other people say, the Evo is the better car (by far) and is well worth saving up a little extra for. But it depends on what you're shooting for. The Evo is the better all-around car and can do pretty well at pretty much everything. The SRT-4 has decent slalom speeds stock (I believe Motor Trend got 68.2 mph if my memory is correct) and a lot of usable power with very little lag, plus it's easy to get a lot of power out of those motors. I used to post on srtforums.com, and I remember some of the better bone stock quarter-mile times being in the 13.7-13.8 range, which is pretty good. But obviously the Evo obliterates that and will run away from it even faster once corners are involved. But as mentioned before, you'll be paying more not just for the car but for the maintenance. Also, I have talked to a few ex-SRT-4 owners who have had some complaints about the car's overall reliability. So it depends on what you want... the cheapest speed possible (and it really is bang-for-the-buck), or an overall solid car that can run with most cars in an automotive decathlon?
But if you end up getting an SRT-4, get an '04 or '05, as they have some extra power from the factory along with the much-needed front LSD.

I was actually shopping for the newest srt-4 I could find when I test drove an 8 at a carmax. Anyway, I drove right over to the mitsu dealer and bought the nicest new one they had (06MR). I didnt know about the tranny issues and whatnot then, or I could have got a non-MR. Anyway, The evo is pricey, and the srt-4 is not, but realistically they are both pretty damn fast, and I would say the SRT-4 handles pretty well for FWD. I love my evo, but I honestly cant tell THAT much of a difference with my driving conditions (everything is paved down here). Granted the evo does handle better, the SRT is just fine. Budget wise, insurance is cheaper, parts are cheaper, you can get dealer warrantied parts!! (mopar), Id get an srt-4 if budget is an issue. They're both really nice and well respected.
Just get some eyebrows/eyelids or whatever they're called on that thing ASAP.
edit: actually, the user above some up there, says the srt-4 is bad on gas?? I figured it would be better than the evo. My evo drinks gas like it was 10 cents a gallon, mabye the evo would be cheaper in the long run.

Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that my previous car was a Neon SRT-4. Remember this: The Dodge was hastily thrown together while the Evo was engineered, scrutinized in its every mechanical detail, to outperform on all road conditions. The Evo is a poor man's super car. The Dodge is just a "fast" American sports compact. No history. No track record. The Neon is all engine. Six inch wide rims? Come on. Laughable. I haven't missed my Dodge one bit. Never. The Evo is the real deal. It's the complete package, capable of going fast in all directions.

Wow guy,
I didnt expect to get so many replys so soon. You guys are awesome, and all of the responses were very well explained. I wish i had time to reply to everyone individually but i dont, so please everyone know that i really appreciate all of you taking the time to answer.
I was even considering getting a 95-99 DSM but then i started hearing about crank-walk so i dont know. I could get one of those right now for like $5k cash. basically im looking for a car to have some fun with but of course dont want it to break down all the time either. I just want to have a fast turbo car because its unique and you dont see them all over the place. Oh yeh, and it wont be a daily driver if that matters any.
-Thanks, again...
