Race gas by itself will not yield any power increase. Simply put, the reason for race fuel is it ability to resist detonation and allowing more boost and timing safely.

In other words, yes you need a tune to take advantage of the race fuel that you are running.
and i love it for that.

Is that really necessary to say?

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe" -Einstein...you just proved him right about the human part.

Anyways, octane boosters are pointless. Get a meth kit and a tune. You will definitely be satisfied.

Methanol is pretty much an octane booster, that would be a double standard. If Octane boosters are so terrible how come you make more power with them and it's proven time and time again. Over the counter auto zone stuff is junk .

the OP is talking about the over the counter octane boosters

i dont consider meth an octane booster, it doesnt increase the octane of the actual gas in the tank. the motor burns the meth and meth has a higher knock threshold then gas. so it acts as racegas by resisting knock more and allowing you to adjust timing and boost accordingly. overall its like having a higher octane gas, but the gas octane istself is not raised. meth is USED as an octane booster, but it actually isnt an octane booster

You an get Tolene and Xylene at any local hardware store. It's just cheaper in bulk, which you can buy from Lowes, or home depot. They are the main ingredients in any octane booster from an auto store.

My Q is, is this a good idea for the EVO (assuming you're on your way to the track, and want the quickest, cheapest possible extra few horses) ?

I think thats its useless at best, or even detrimental... but the store staff are reassuring me that i am wrong...

ideas please -

no need for it if you want a boost of octane get a gal of 110 or 100 oct mixed up with a half a tank of 93, that will do a lot more than the octane booster, also a gal of 110 from sunnoco is 8$ the octane booster is prolly close to that in some cases more,,, so whey the pros and cons you will bennefit more from 110
