If you dont like the Plates in front
They don't need to aim at any specific part of your car. Besides, it's a radar gun so all they have to do is point it in your general direction. You might be referring to laser, and even those just need to hit some part of the car. I got lasered three nights ago and I didn't have front plates to aim off of. Didn't get pulled over.
For those states who need a front plate. The law states that it must be mounted to the front of the vehicle. The visor isn't the front, neither is the windshield. If the law stated must be visible from the front the way you have it mounted (Its been done before) would be the best. Too bad the law is pretty loophole-less. <--- new word?
i just keep my plate in my car. when i have been pulled over i just take it out from under my seat and put it on my dash. havent got a ticket yet (have been pullerd over 4-5 times for no plate). i always say i am in the middle of purchasing a bracket and it is on backorder bla bla bla bla. the cops always say "alright, just put it on once you get the bracket, have a good day."
He'll be like, "didn't you say that to me 2 months ago?"
i cant stand the front plate lol, but that idk if i like to much, it makes the front plate stand out to much, and im trying to make it so ppl cant see it haha. i dont use one and here in NJ its illegal but when i go to car meets and what not, i throw it in my window because cops are like sharks out there.
As the radar comes out of the gun, the waves refract and deflect off any object they encounter and some of the waves bounce back to the gun and register as a vehicle's speed. Radar guns tend to come back with a reading from the largest metal object. Think about how the radar works with airplanes and ships.
Example: There is a 2 lane highway and I am running radar traveling southbound. A Prius (80 mph) passes a semi (65mph) going northbound and I try to get a lock on the prius right after he completes the pass. If there is any kind of distance at all between us, the reading from the radar gun will be hit or miss. Most of the time the radar is going to either fluctuate between the semi's speed and the car's speed and not long enough to get a solid lock (error) or come back with the semi's speed if the semi and car are close enough together.
As a result of this, it is extremely hard to get a solid reading off of a motorcycle...there is just not enough metal in the front profile of a bike for the radar to bounce back off of.
Laser, on the other hand is precise. You look through the window of the gun and place the dot on the object you intend to get a reading from (usually a flat spot on the vehicle and try to avoid windows), and you get the speed of the exact vehicle in question. Because of the reliability and precision of lasers, MOST cops use them over radar anymore. In fact, you can find a radar gun from a police surplus auction for ~$25-30.
Hope this helps some people when dealing with some of my d***head fellow officers.
Cool idea but I wouldn't do it. Looks kinda stupid. Right now I'm running with a plate, but if I find a vinal to cover the front holes for the spring summer I'm taking it off. I'll keep the bracket under my seat and just tell the officer it broke. Not to worried about it, I have a special way of getting out of most tickets.
