So you did get it registered by a slight of hand move. I'm sure no one will ever come after you though. In the south car registration is a very open and rarely regulated thing. Enjoy the car....but beware that;

Since the registration only reads as "lancer", you will only be paid out in the event you have a loss at the value of a Lancer. And when the insurance comes by to check it out to estimate it's damages, they could slap you with an insurance fraud charge if they notice that the car in question is in fact not a US Lancer. Insurance fraud is ILLEGAL.

And if it is registered as a Lancer only, EI likely did some form of VIN tag switching to get the VIN to reflect the numbers of a US based Lancer. This is a fairly common practice among individuals who are illegally importing cars in to the US. Vin plate swapping is also ILLEGAL.

EI never did such a thing. Stop assuming things please. When the cars get out of the shop, they will have fully legit VINs that are NOT switched from the US Lancer.

Also, my car is insured as a Lancer w/ a Turbo, insured for $39K.
And they did come by and inspect the car.

Well then you can surely provide us with the first 5 digits of that VIN, right? It's not enough to identify YOU personally, but it will help clear up a few things about how the cars are identified in general.

Sure I can, as soon as I get my car back from the conversion shop.

Sorry to keep beating ya up / beating up EI, but since there is no real paperwork filed with http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ it sounds like your "conversion" maybe a while.?

All we can do is assume things when no one from the actual company is willing to bring the info to the table. Like it or not, all the heresay and conjecture about how EI conducts it's business is directly due to their lack of forthrightedness.

Thanks for your info though. You are helping to clear the mystery from the air.

Maybe I missed something here, but how can your car be titled if it's still being legalized?

Maybe is not legal, I dont really care....IT IS registered to be drivin on the street as a Lancer and thats all I am worried about. Take it for what its worth...

Dude, I don't think anyone is bashing on you or your dope *** ride. I think everyone's just trying to look out to make sure you know what's going on. If you believe you're gonna be ok with that ride, then props to you. I do wish I had an Evo, but I would also want to make sure that no one would try to take it away when I do have it.

Nobody is bashing you. Most of the people on this thread are curious on how EI has the ability to legalize Evo's. After reading this and other threads it seems to me that NO Evos in the US (excluding the new 8's) can be driven on public roads legally. Maybe you should read through this thread to decide for yourself if your Evo is in trouble of being seized.

I wanna know how people think that some governement agency can take your import car. If you want to import a car and drive it around on private property there's nothing illegal about that. Hell, I do big burnouts in my driveway because its my property and burnouts aren't illegal on private property. Why can't I import an Evo and park it in my living room if I want to?

If I wanted to import a nuclear warhead to use as a coffee table you think they would let me, since it was on private property? j/k

The intent of the importing was for street use. Importing for off-road / race only use is much easier. I don't think you would have a problem getting the car for just driving around some dirt roads on your land.
The issue here is that the cars are specifically to be fully registered and street legal, and the question has risen as to whether it is being done properly. No matter how much bickering goes back and forth or how many people stick their nose into it (even if its not relevant to them), only time will tell the result.
