Ignition Switch question

Hello, my Evo is currently in need of an ignition switch. I have been told 2 different things by different sources. One side is saying when I get a new switch I have to bring my car to the dealer to have them program my key to that switch. The other side is saying just put on the new switch and go!

I need someones input on what really needs to be done, someone who has swapped switches before. Thanks!

1st are you sure you need a new IGN. switch? is it sticking or binding? waifers inside could be sticking and those can be replaced along with the waifer springs.
Now the key wears out over time and that can change the cuts on the key enough for it to not turn the swith.
Now anytime you want to add a key to an existing transponder type you do need to program the key to the ecu. IF you change the Ign. swith out you will need to program the new keys to the car or they will not work. You do not have to go to a dealer to get this done. call locksmiths in your area to see if they have the reader to do it.
Now if you get a new IGN. you can have it re-keyed to use the old key and you do not need get it reprogramed.
So in a way they are both right.

swap and go, thats definately the answer. and changing out the swtich is very easy. just take out the top and bottom steering wheel cover, and the ignition switch is on the left hand side held by a philips screw.
btw, i have an ignition switch for sale if your interested. just pm me.

I know when I order chevy and ford ign Switches they have new keys with them. I have not ordered any for an evo, so I don't know. You can buy an ign switch and have a locksmith rekey it to your existing key. That will keep you from needing a reprogram

in the evo's, the ignition switch is at the other end of the key. so a shaft, that is turned by the key, extends from the right side of the steering wheel to the left side of the steering wheel. that shaft then turns the inside of the ignition switch.
what happens in our ignition switch's is that the contacts can wear out, similar to a distributor cap and rotor.

It was the ignition switch. I did NOT need to reprogram or chip my key, nor did I need a new key FYI.

What if someone tried stealing your evo (and failed) and the key still works just won't start the car?
