But once done, you wont look back and be paranoid. Just save up. Get it done right.
Why are you dropping the oil pan? Also why are you replacing gaskets such as on the valve cover? Does something like that really deteriorate after 60k miles? Fortunately for me(or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) I've had my valve cover off a dozen times and replaced the valve cover gasket and tube seals as well a couple of times but that was my choice and in reality they probably could have been reused.

using lancershop as a guide for ANYTHING is a mistake

mitsu recommends timing belt at 60k...many go much longer than this without problems.

i would rather spend the few extra hundred dollars for piece of mind.

Somewhat related to this: how can you tell if a timing belt is new or needs replaced? I bought my car with 120k on it and the previous owner said he did the 120k service, but I would like some way to verify.

I have always heard there is no way to tell. I heard that if your car back fires that could be a sign only thing is there are so many other things that can cause that so that wouldn't be a good way to tell at all if it's even true.

Pull the upper cam cover and inspect the belt. Also, if they did it correctly, you should see a shiny new water pump just by looking straight down into the engine.

sounds like a lot of guys here need to re-read their manuals, mitsubishi only suggest changing your timing belt at 60k miles if you live in certain states because it is required for emission reasons. other than that, i would suggest keeping an eye on the belt. frays, cracks, dry rotting are all signs of a bad belt....backfiring!!! haha thats a first.

I just changed everything required for the 60k and my stuff all looked brand new. The car was purchased with 45k miles, so maybe someone did it before selling the car. Either way, I did it for piece of mind and I got all OEM stuff with Gates racing belts. My water pump looked perfect in comparison to some of the rust buckets I've seen on this site

I did my 60k for $260, including water pump and tools.
