I don't care if you buy an evo or a sti, you should get your moneys worth a 30k Rally Inspired Street Legal Race Car..

No Detonation issues, No Chip paint, No Rattling, No Transmission grind, nothing. Nothing . But AFTERMARKET PARTS.. ^_^

Oh wow, the STIs are detting again
If you look at the poll they have on that forum, you will see that
25% of the STI have detonation
25% of the people dont know, so I would assume it may well det (see below)
40% of the people say their car is fine
The poll is a strange one, with options that are not mutually exclusive (what the hell does that mean "I use cheap gas"?? that is dets? That it doesnt? That it may??
)
Let's put the poll aside for a minute; I havent read anything but the two threads you guys linked here, but in one of these threads, a user states that "every single tuner's STI has detonation problems".
I would conclude from that and the fact that 25% of the cars det for sure and another 25% probably do, that there is a serious issue here (similar to the issue we had in Europe, and particularly in France: Subaru France have acknowledged 8 cars blowing the engine from detonation; a well known tuner in France told me 27 STIs blew up. Considering that they only sell a few hundred and that there may be more I do not know of, this a lot).
They talk about the ignition timing being too advanced, but do not mention air fuel ratios or EGT. In Europe, a problem was the fuel supply.
I hope our STI driving friends get the problem fixed PROPERLY by SOA (in France, they kept changing the engine until the warranty expired!
)
I would take what they say with a pinch of salt, though: they say they heard that the Evo 8 dets
Forgot to say: one guy on that forum has a car that dets but got totally ignored!

Hey Guys,
I think I am getting pinging on mine.
4th gear with the pedal to the floor, I hear whats sounds like tapping on a sheet of aluminum. Its a very light sound, but its there. The temps are @ about 88-95 deg F and the elevation is 5000 ft. Gas is Chevron 91 octane.
1050 miles on the odo.
(It actually makes the sound in just about every gear. Only in certain rev ranges though.)
Am I crazy?

Same thing happens with my 98 2.5RS Claudius... It sounds like light tapping of aluminum when i step on the gas. I brought my car in for a 72,000 KM checkup a while ago, and they said its fine. No, my car doesn't have blown head gaskets
Maybe its just normal with the 2.5L DOHC engines? (even though I know the old EJ25 and new EJ25t eninges are different)

i was the one that said that most tuners had deton. problems regardless of octane they used. thats the info i got from talking to some of the tunes myself and they all said the exact thing. also when i asked where did the guy get the info about the EVO deton. he reffered to the tests Shiv was doing on a 91 octane and the car had deto. for one run on the dyno but then the ECU did its job and fixed it. the problem with the STI as i see it is the fact that the ECU doesn't seem to have a long term memory. the car would det. on the dyno, the ecu will pull timing and the car will be fine for 2-3 runs but on the fourth one it will deto. again.

Hi guys
Welcome to evolutionm
awddrifter: as far as I know, a 2.5RS is a normally aspirated car (not too familiar with US models)?
blonde: I did not mean to say that it was yourself that should be taken with a pinch of salt if that is what you thought. I totally believe that the tuners you have spoken to told you that their cars detonated.
I also understand from the original thread on the Subaru forum that the ECU pulls timing when detonation occurs but then goes back to normal after a while and the car dets again.
I am sure that shiv and other tuners are looking into the problem and will come up with a solution, but if I had bought an STI, I would have the following concerns with it:
- I just got a brand new car from a well respected Japanese manufacturer and it suffers from detonation in standard form
- I have to pay a tuner not to improve my car, but simply make it safe and prevent it from going bang
- having it tuned would void my warranty
To me, personally, that would be unacceptable.
I hope it was simply a first batch of cars that were rushed or something and that it will be ok later on;
I hope that nobody will see his engine fail;
I hope that SOA will address the problem asap and fix what needs to be fixed;
I hope you all enjoy your AWD performance cars

Speedlimit....
Ya SOA better fix this issue, because detonation is something that is not livable.
Plus if STI's aren't on the road, what else will challenge us evo's? We need some kind of competition

Detonation is a cheap and easy recall fix for the tree hugging **** heads (And they are) at SOA in Cherry Hill, NJ.
Just get FHI to send them revised, more conservative maps to flash just like they did for the WRX's...shouldn't be too big of a deal at all.
Andy (The soon to be EVO convert)

Claudius: Yeah, 2.5 rs's are N/A... I own one... thats why I said "even though I know the old EJ25 and new EJ25t eninges are different"
I just think that there might be some kind of connection to the sounds, since they are both DOHC (only the 98 2.5rs had a DOHC motor out of the GM6/8 2.5RS's)... I'm just guessing that the sounds are related, I don't know for sure...
Sorry I wasn't clear
