EVO > Contour...

really stupid to dump all that money into a car like that... unless it's just a project and not a daily driver....

Go with the EVO or Sti. Both great cars. I'd suggest driving them both first as they seem to have very different personalities.

Do you care about handling? What about braking or drivability? If your just about straight line remember it probably takes 2 grand or less to get an evo well within the 12's on street tires.

If you want to get 12's with a contour good luck! You need drivtrain mods on top of engine to hold your new power not to mention brakes, suspention and a good tuner.

Mechanical Problems: EVO vs STi

When I first bought my EVO and drove it showing it off, Subaru WRX drivers and STi fans would always give me crap about how Mitsubishi's build quality sucked, the car was going to fall apart, and how the engine was gonna blow up with it's "ridiculously high" 19 pounds of compression and almost a point higher compression than the STi...

Normally I ignore such comments, but their complete "holy'er than thou" attitude really got under my skin... they really really pissed me off

Well, craptalkin is a fickle beyotch I guess, because Subie STi owners are reporting all kinds of odd problems now, crappy build quality on their big bug catcher scoop and flappy wing, the drive by wire system whacking out and stranding them, blinking check engine and cruise control lights, and most seriously some dangerous detonation issues with the engine that could seriously affect longevity in the STi...

In comparison, what problems are the EVOs having? The deceleration noises in 3rd and 4th gear?? Is that it? My car has been utterly reliable since hte day I bought it, and I am crossing my fingers!!

payback sucks for the loud mouth Subie guys I guess... somebody slap me if I ever start doggin' and bad mouthing the competition!! DOH!!!?!? Or did I just do that?!?!?!

My car has been great. I love it. My dad buys cars for the company he works for. He buys alot of Subarus for the sales people. He test drove the STi and said it is fast as hell. He also said the hoodscoop shook pretty badley.

My Sti runs fantastic. I never have noticed the hood scoop or tail bouncing much to be honest. Doesn't bother me one bit. The car has been nothing but fantastic so far.

Every new car line is going to have unique problems and the EVO and STI both have a few issues. The detonation issue on the STI could be a very serious problem, however, it is much to early to draw any broad conclusions. I do remember Shiv reported hearing detonation while driving the press car.

I have been amazed at the number of STI supporters who made fools of themselves arguing that at 3500rpm and wot and 19psi, the 4G63 was stressed to an inch of its life. Looks like the STI turbo is pretty stressed at 15psi.... . Imagine that.

I did hear about some faulty carbon fiber spoilers on Evos. Something about bubbles or something.

I don't pay attention to much of the engine/tranny/suspension complaints about any car. It is my feeling that most of the time it is the fault of the OWNER. Imagine that. All these little kids somehow get these cars, and show off thinking they are everything they are not....

I see this behavior every weekend night at the local car cruise places.... Sure there might be a few bugs in both of the STi and Evo, but I am thinking it is the DRIVER trying to copy the car magazines or their F&F idols.....

I will 2nd Lightsped's motion - I know about 10 Evo owners and none of them have experienced any problems save some brake fade on hot track days (this is to be expected with stock pads imo). And many of these guys have had their cars to the track... I am sure there will be a few genuine issues with the STi & Evo, but most are probably user error.

Not that this matters, but I am gonna say it cause it is from a mechanic(tech) that works on both mitsu and suby day in and day out, and that I trust him very much.....he worked on my talon many times and he will be the only one touching my evo come time for maintenace. But, I was at the dealer talking to him about 2 days ago...and he had a subie ripped apart giving it a set of head gaskets(go figure). I asked him what he seriously thought about suby and their quality. On a side note: He always used to dog me about how mitsu was not up to par with others like honda. But then the dealership aquired the subaru line about a year ago.....and when I asked him this....much to my surprise he said that subies quality is very subpar......and I asked him like how compared to mitsu...he said that mitsus engines are built better and 10 times easier to work on than hokey subaru....with their almighty boxster engine. Not that he is the end all and say all to everything but this is not the only one I have heard this from. It is a personal opinion that I liked to agree with cause the suby ****** always get my last nerve. It just makes me laugh when they think 19 psi is alot for a 4g63 engine. NOT!!!

I agree with your comments, it seems that alot of people already abuse the cars, but alot of others seem to be first time performance car buyers or something, and aren't ready to accept the negatives that come with a high perfromance car... things like squeaky brembos, rock hard suspensions, loud and quick wearing tires and twitchy steering, howling and otherwise noisey and crunching drivetrain... these are somewhat necessary by products of what makes this car so great!! If you wanted a silent and smooth barko lounger on wheels you should have bought the GS300 or something!!

... for instance, this 3rd and 4th gear deceleration "howl" that many complain about - if it's what I think they are describing then I think it's likely just normal gear and tranny whine combined with exaust harmonics - I hear those things in my own EVO when decelerating in those gears now (since it was pointed out to me) and never even thought a thing about it until everyone here started complaining about it... but then again I have been driving souped up Z28s nonstop since 1986 - I guess differential/tranny howl and exaust harmonics becomes "normal" to you at some point with hotroded cars

GO GO GADGET EVO!!
