Detonation is a cheap and easy recall fix for the tree hugging **** heads (And they are) at SOA in Cherry Hill, NJ.
And now the 276 horse detuned USDM STi is born!!

I would be having a FIT if I had just bought an STi... that was my original plan too, I wanted the STi and was going to buy it, but I got too impatient!! And so the EVO came home with me!!

Ok, I just checked out those links and I'm curious. A lot of them are saying they can hear the detonation and others are saying car runs smooth. Then they're asking for people to listen for pinging. Not ONE of them mentioned the fact that you can't hear it ALL the time unless it's really bad. They need to hook up a knock sensor or get some dyno time regardless of what sounds they're hearing. If they're hearing it that's awful. I would be screaming at Subaru for this. Most of them might be detonating and thinking everything is fine. That's a serious recall.

My thoughts exactly! Is there any geographic trends on the pinging. Like, is it only happening in the west where we get octanally *******ed?

New unproven motor=can of worms! I new it!

The only thing fishy is that:

The Subaru's use a VERY HIGH TECH denso ECU. My car's ECU was kicking my ECUTEK's *** over detonation. Pulling timing, and adding fuel.

Is the STI's ECU less advanced than the WRX? The WRX's ecu is a straight pain in the ***. It lears fuel curves, and timing curves based on A:F and knock count. Very advanced Algorythims. So advanced that it is impossible to piggyback them successfully. TSX Utec, or standalone are about the only ways. Otherwize, over a months time, they just learn around any tweaks!

Maybe the STi's have set maps?

Makes you wonder!

hey guys,

just to answear a few of the questions asked:

Claudius: i am not an STI owner, i was about to get my STI last week but due to the fact that i share the same feeling as you do about buying a brand new 32,000 car with detonation, i bought an EVO.

Speedlimit: i had the same question as you and that is why i talked to Shiv who lives in Cali (91 crappy gas) and i also talked to turboxs who are in Maryland (93-94 octane gas). both tuners said the same thing about the detonation but Shiv's was much worse (he said it sounded like a machine gun or a dwarf with a hammer).

BADWRX: it happend both on the east coast as well as the west coast.

Evilution: i agree, most chances are that thee are a lot of owners out there who can't here it even though it is there or don't know what it sounds like so they think that everything is fine.

for a better understanding of the issue, here is a sound file which was recorded by turboxs on their car:

http://www.turboxs.com/_images/12%2...teep%20hill.wav

for better view, use windows media player and take a look at the spikes of the skins.

GO GO GADGET EVO!!
It's not a howl dude, it sounds like metal grinding. Consider yourself lucky if you don't have the decel niose cause it is anoying as hell. I know what gear whine sounds like and I love it. I know what harmonic vibrations sound like and I'm willing to live with them. I don't like hearing what sounds like metal grinding away everytime i let of the gas. Though I think most evos have the noise in some form or fassion it probably is too faint to notice, not in my case and several others though.

I think I have found the source of it with the help of some folks here on the forum and i will say that honda was forced to address a very similar issue with the s2000's that lead to two different clutch disk re-designs.

Just cause it isn't raining at your house doesn't mean it aint raing at mine right?????

Hi,

Welcome, congrats on your EVO, and thank you for the information! Detonation on 93 octane is bad and aftermarket mods are going to be a big time crap shoot.

BTW the link is broke. Thanks again and I'm sorry you could not get the STI.

Speedlimit...

Hmm.. from what I read, the DET was caused by really advanced timing on the STi, on the order of +20 degrees advance.

Stock ones don't seem to DET.

the advanced timing was done by the factory ECU and at peak power. all the cars that were tested were stock cars with 0 mods

So the stock ECU was doing this without being manipulated?

yes. and the worse part is that it happens at full boost and at 3500-4500 rpm which is where peak power is.
