Removing engine piece by piece?

Hey everyone, I am currently trying to take my engine out of my car and I was just wondering if anyone has ever pulled the motor out piece by piece. Is this even possible? Would it be easier to remove the head and anything else attached to the block and lift just the block out? Sorry for the stupid post but I've never did this before.

it will be less time consuming to remove the whole engine as a unit and disassemble it outside of the car. you would still have to disconnect the trans and transfercase, depending on what you are doing. if you don't have and engine picker, then doing it piecemeal by yourself is probably one of the only ways to go. just keep all the pieces together, and you should be good.

I hope you have done your research and planning, this is a big job. Keep everytihng tagged and boxed, theres lots of youtubes on how to do this properly, you should be able to hire a engine lifter to pull the block out and get the thing on a low bench for easy access. Otherwise you are bending over all the time into the engine bay.

It will be way easier to remove the engine assembled, I usually drop it out of the bottom and slide it out.

I wouldn't even try to take it out in pieces... Have you ever done an engine swap?

I've pulled/installed drivetrains over and over in Hondas and Subarus. Being somewhat experienced made my swap take ~30 minutes. Complete disassembly would take ages.

Power tools are a blessing.

Thank u all for the responses. I have been a ton of research and watch a lot of videos of removing the engine. I really just wanted to see if it would be even remotely as hard to do as pulling it as one piece. Now that I have all this advice I am going to be buying an engine hoist and leveler. This will be my first engine removal. So far I have all the bolt ins off. The turbo, ic pipes, fuel rail wiring harness. Next is the trans case

I just did my first removal as well. It really wasn't all that bad, and I was almost in shock when I actually lifted the thing out. I bought an engine hoist for $100 from craigslist.

The transfer case was the most annoying thing. I don't know how people get it off without removing the intake manifold. maybe I was doing something wrong, but there is an oil line right in front of one of the bolts you have to take out which required taking the intake manifold off (which was also annoying). Also, if you weren't already planning on it, remove the engine with the trans on it (I even took the engine out with the exhaust piping still on it up to the o2 housing and will be putting it back on when putting it in)

Good luck! It's a fun ride.
