Separating and inspecting the MHI housing??

Hey everyone,

I just removed my stock IX turbo yesterday and will be sending it in to FP to have it built into a JB black. Got the vband clamp off , but I can't for the life of me separate the turbo from the housing to inspect the volute for cracks... Ive spent a long time with a flathead screwdriver , pb blaster, and applying pressure, but I don't want to damage the housing. I'm about ready to just ship it in the way it is and hope for the best. Any tips on removing the hot side, and on shipping the turbo? (Btw, this is my stock turbo that now has 120k miles, zero shaft play, awesome condition! Got the car in early 2008 with only 11k miles.)

Yea looks like it might be seized due to rust. You can try to heat cycle it. Try spraying pb blaster and then heating it up with a heat gun. Once it starts to smoke you will know its getting hot. When you get it hot enough you can dump it into an ice bucket.

Most of the time they just need that initial jolt to start separating. I wouldn't use a flat head in chance you might bung up the band surface. I would try some heat and then use a dead blow on the housing. Just don't get carried away.

After getting the v-band off, I just tapped it with a mallet. Well.. more like whacked it. Just be careful and you won't hurt anything.

Here's your answer! Its a chunk of cast steel, your not going to hurt it... just use common sense with what size hammer you use and how hard your hitting. Try to hit it at points all around so it backs off evenly and not crooked

Deadblow is the best.. my rubber/poly one did the job, though.

Deadblow hammer. If you don't have one, buy one. It's a great tool to have.

Go to the hardware store
Buy a brass putty knife
Find a hammer
Tap the seam in the 12,3,6, and 9 o clock position
Take your time, it will separate
The brass won't damage anything, peace

Pb blaster has been sprayed on. Let's see if I can get it apart . Rubber mallet, dead blow, or the putty knife.
