I'm considering adding a trans-temp sensor to my Evo IX 6-speed. I'm not sure if anyone has done this before, but I did search and came up with nothing.

I assume the sending unit would look something like this:



Can anyone provide feedback or suggestions?

No harm in it. If i kept my 6 speed i was going to try to install a pump and oil cooler as well.

I can't see it hurting as long as wherever that sensor is tapped into doesn't leak or take away from the structural integrity of the housing

That's the thing- I want to use a factory hole or plug. I really don't want to do any drilling or tapping.

There won't be any harm in doing so, but honestly, it's kind of a waste.

I work for one of the larger aftermarket gauge companies. We get this question quite often "I want to put a transmission temp gauge on my manual transmission - Should I and if so, where do I put it?"

Generally speaking, in the pan if you don't already have a port. However, at the end of the day, manual transmission temps just don't (generally) get up to where the autos do. Autos have higher pressures and more friction when compared to a manual trans, and thus the very high temps that manual transmissions don't (typically) see.

Now, this isn't to say the gauge is useless or isn't going to be beneficial to you. Keeping an eye on temps is always a good thing, there are no downsides to monitoring it, as long as it's installed properly, not impeding any fluid flow anywhere, and obviously not leaking. I'm just saying keep your expectations for it in line with what you're likely going to experience in real life, as honestly, the gauge probably won't move around a whole lot.
