In dash double din w ability to view Evo scan and listen to music/radio?
Biggiesacks you seem to be the guy to talk to. I've given up on evoscan gone haltech elite and am planning on an double din GPS unit. I plan to use wifi only once every few months for map updates..... other than that it can never update and just use the GPS+amp+haltech display features on the http://e3io.com/carpc will I run into any problems?
I agree completely though that this shouldn't be so difficult to pull off, my own attempts at a Windows based tablet/evoscan solution failed, with probably close to 100 hours invested. The big problem is windows won't run on arm processors so you can't get a decent spec'd windows tablet for less then 500 bucks. Windows being so bloated it just doesn't run well on the lower cost stuff.
Those guys look like they know what they are doing so hopefully not. Some of the biggest issues about having a car PC are the power supply and the hardware being suitable for the automotive environment and since those guys specialize I'm sure they have a decent solution. I would use this with a stereo amp though and not with their own internal amp. Everyone has their own priorities when it comes to stereos but since I use to install them back in the day I tend to like a nicer sounding system. So that being said I would opt for their nicer sound card option as well. Definitely worth looking in to how good of a warranty they offer and maybe look into getting it extended if possible.
Your mileage may vary with the GPS, phones and other devices don't just use the GPS sensor in the navigation apps so you may find this solution a little less accurate then say a smart phone with it's accelerometers and wifi location sensing. Also probably goes without saying you won't get traffic updates if you aren't connected.

I am a programmer and wanna start making apps on the side for some extra income. Maybe I can start reverse engineering and build evoscan for android if anybody would be interested that is

also the tactrix/openport forums have some good info on the protocol as well. Mut III is basically ISO1914 with a few quirks.
you wouldn't have to remake evoscan, just something that can speak mut III to the ecu and display the returned data in some kind of graphical gauge form as well as saving the data to a file. There is a github library for mut III called libmut here:

This site has some pretty cost effective car pc components and bare bones systems: http://www.mini-box.com

I'll throw my hat in the ring here. This is going to be my solution, although the computer is super slow it should get the job done at a price I can agree with.
Modded double din kit and a cheap .
The tablet has a very nice screen it is just slow. I figure I can run a USB port replicator with a and the Tactrix 1.3 cable to it. I'll post a picture when I get to installing it. Total cost is going to be $150 including sound car. Working on building the rest of the car currently.

That tablet only has a single USB port that is also used for charging. You won't be able to charge/power the tablet AND use the USB port at the same time.
1 x Micro USB (also used for power, cannot be used while charging)

These are awesome but I'm not sure I could justify the price just for evoscan.

What would be the dis-advantage of the RaceCapture/Pro MK3 stuff? Bryan (@razorlab) says you can log to a SD card. Looks like it works for Andriod, IOS, Windows, OSX.
