Will this DIY cop work on JDM evolution 8 MR edition running stock ecu? The CDI version from spark tech and Buschur does not work on JDM evo8 MR on stock ecu. Want to make sure before I go ahead with this.

anyone used the hitachi coils from the v6 Honda stuff? I have a set of those and a set of denso ones, the first page shows a picture of some that look like the hitachi ones. I work for a Honda dealer so I have a bunch laying around and old harnesses as well, just want to make sure.

Hey man i tried the hitachi coils on mine just i could get ahold of the denso ones at the time and car idled great but when i had any load on the car past 1/3 throttle it fell on its face. Swapped back to the stock ones problem gone now i have the denso coils from a civic and been running for 10k or so not one issue.

Looking for some help.. So I put together my own COP kit with new Denso/Toyota coils & Spoolin' Up DIY wiring kit. I've run it for a couple hundred miles, & have had massive misfiring problems with anything more than 20% throttle or the slightest boost. I gapped the plugs down to .024 & it still didn't help. So tonight I tried throwing the stock coils back on, but as soon as I start the engine it sounds like its running on 3 cylinders...massive unburnt gasoline smell from the exhaust. I pulled the negative cable off the battery to reset the ECM, but that didn't do anything.. Im stuck as to what the problem might be. Anybody experience something like this, or have suggestions? Thanks.

Checked the spark plugs yet to make sure none are broken?

Where'd you buy the coils from and what did you pay for 4 of them? If you didn't pay ~$240 for a set of 4 then it's likely you could have bought fake Denso's (unless they were from a reputable source). Retail price on them is ~$80 each

I've pulled the plugs about 4 times now...everything looks good as far as plug condition is concerned.

The coils I bought from a local supplier our shop uses for aftermarket parts. I'm confident in the legitimacy of the coils. What baffles me is that when I try to throw the stock coils on, the engine runs rough. When I put the COP kit back on, it runs smooth. Why isn't it running properly when I'm simply putting the stock coils on, but freaks out like this instead???

Only other info I can add just to have it all out there, is that I think its cylinders 2 or 3 causing the problem...the coloration on the plugs is different (darker) from the outer 2 plugs.

One of your stock coils bad?

What is the part number on the coils you are using? what is the mounting plate made of (how thick is it)? Are the terminals properly crimped and making good connections?

I'm using the plate that comes in the DIY kit from Spoolin' Up. The part number on the coils is 90919-02240. All connections were soldered as good practice with any wiring. The fact that the COP kit is having misfires is only a partial concern at this point - I'm mainly bewildered & getting irritated right about now on why the engine isn't accepting the original ignition system back, & is not idling smoothly with the stock coils.. I tried putting the stock coils back on tonight, idle ran rough for under 2 minutes, & the inside coil that is for cylinders 2 & 3 got smoked! I put the COP coils back on, & what do you know - purrs like a kitten!

The coil on the right with the bubbled side is the smoked one. The closeup that shows the body split open had smoke coming out of it when the engine was idling for those 2 minutes.. What the heck could cause that?!

bad grounds would be my guess. I'd try and find someone with a working stock setup and toss theirs in your car (someone with a setup they're willing to sacrifice if need be). see if that idles normal or does the same thing

that system you have now is probably garbage and why it's not idling properly. generally if electronics blow smoke, they're a goner

This screams dead short to me. I would uncover and triple check all connection to ensure they are only connected to the wiring they should be. Check for damaged insulation and wire frays that could be shorting to chassis/engine ground. I highly doubt that coil spontaneously combusted (for lack of better words). My money is on an issue with the coil harness leading to it. I would not run the car until you come to the root cause of that issue. If the short was severe enough you could do much more harness and component damage downstream.

Has anyone else noticed that the Toyota / Denso 90919-02204 coils seem to be about 6mm (0.25") too short for the little coil spring inside to actually reach the top tip of the spark plug? The car runs fine but if you measure everything they aren't actually touching...

The coils seem to be powerful enough that you can lift the coil all the way off the plug and the car keeps idling fine.
