I got it

I have had that noise from the day I drove off the lot. I just fixed it last night with some JIC FLAT 2 service

does it do it in the rain?? That was my first clue that it was some kind of lubrications problem because mine would be quiet if there was alot of water on the road. Water acting as a lubricant on the cups of the strut.

Jack it up, spray some waterproof lube in the cups.... takes 5 minutes

Sorry to go off topic but I hate it when I go over a bump and the cd player skips, annoys the hell out of me.

well finally my mitsu dealer took off all the suspension on my car it was a pain to see the whole suspension on the floor i mean everything!! so they reinforced the sway bar bushings with rubber and no good then we changed the end links on the sway bar and it felt better but the noise was still there then we took the strut out and the springs the strut was in good condition but the spring we noticed that it was touching itself were it coils around on the upper part of it and the lower part of it so know they tell me they will put some rubber hose in between the coils so that it doesnt touch itself i hope this is the end of this problem what i think is that the coil or spring does this cause when i had the car since new i drove the car like 150 miles with the spacers that come when new on it i went to pick the car up to the bay and i lowered the car from the ship that it came in it came directly fom japan but from the seaport to the mitsu dealer is about 150miles thats how long i drove it with does things maybe they deformed the spring in some way i think cause they took the spacers and the whole clunking noise started. today i will go pick up my car and see if this is the final solution to the problem ill keep you updated!!!

Add me to the list with the clunking sound. Lots of good info in this thred, it just needs to be condensed so don't have to read 18 pages.

FWIW my "front end clunking" has all but gone away over time... no clue, I never did anything about it, but I still catch a clunk here and there over road joints and holes. Overall I just get solid thuds now.

I got the clunk in my '03 Evo in November 2005 after picking up my car from the shop that put in my new clutch and flywheel. The shop guys drove the car around and heard it too, so they put it back on the lift and tightened everything they could find. No dice. It still clunked.

But sometime during the last 2 months the clunk disappeared without my realizing it. I didn't realize it until I went to the same shop last week to get my car teched for an upcoming track day. The owner asked about it, and I was like, "Uhhh...."

Whatever it was, my clunk was definitely related to suspension compressing or uncompressing, whether due to bumps in the road, cornering, or hard acceleration and deceleration.

It was very disconcerting.

So i think i found out this noise. My car started to do it for the past 3 days really bad. Well just so happens the bolt in the rear motor mount busted in half literally tonight we heard it drop out of the car on the highway i barley made it home. I think it has somethin to do with that. Any kind of recall on this if anyone knows about? Might wana check on this cause defs if the bolts or the mount is defective it can cause the motor to move a **** load and make this noise everyone is referring to just a suggestion

check your front swaybar links..
i had the noise for a long time.. til i took a really good look at the front sway bar links.. one had actually sheared off at the bolt. So in my case,. the noise was the sway bar hitting the chassis..clunk...
i bought a new endlink bolted it back on.. and no more noise

results may vary

I'm thinking most of the time, it is normal behavior. This is after all year #4 of production with the same issue.

Note I said "most".

I only get it one or two times. BUT, mine is during a right hand, turn by my house. You cacome down a hill, start the turn the. The suspension compresses, and you make a nice swooping turn and go up the next hill. Real fun drive, but this is the only time I ever get the noise and that's only if I come into this turn a little hotter then normal.

my solution...

i had the same clunking noise from the left front tire when i would make a right turn and sometimes when i hit a bump. i looked under the car and couldn't see any problems, but once i lifted the car i found that both sway bar links had sheared off. whenever the lower conntrol arm would lift, it would hit the stub of the linkage bolt.

replaced both swaybar link kits (mitsu part #MR954887 - one kit for each side, i paid $10.82 each) - the noise is gone and the car handles much better (as you would expect). the parts number is for an '02 Lancer OZ Rally
