Clunking front end noise??
The EVO Clunk sound
I guess this clunking noise will stay with EVO for good. 06 IX MR is making the evo clunking noise here. Can't believe after all these years mitsui still can't fix the problem. What a shame.
My Evo V/// only seems to make the clunk noise when the car is cold and I start to pull away. Everytime morning I leave my house, it never fails, I turn right and there it is. It sounds like something is broken. But no matter how many times I put her on the lift, can't seem to find the problem. I hear some kind of noise when turning the axle by hand when the car is in the air, but I can't be certain it is that same clunk. I bought the car used and the car does have whining in first gear (bearing), so i think maybe the car was beat on really bad before I got it. I hope I do not need to replace the axles. Any thoughts?
Although this thread is pretty long, there's very good info in here.... I have Zeal V6 coilovers with the same problem so it's not just stock c/o's making the noise (Buddy Clubs, Zeals, a few others also make the same noise)...
The only similarity between the stock coilovers and aftermarket coilovers is the missing rubber insulator or "rubber hose" between the first and second coil on the top and bottom of the spring.... Tein's are the only aftermarket coilovers with this design "rubber insulation between the first2 coils and last2 coils of the spring" that I'm aware of (which is why they don't have that 'clunk' noise)...
When installing these "rubber hoses", as ghetto as it may sound (but it works), just check the front sway bar links since you have the car up on jacks....

Mine is real bad, the littlest bump in the road and it clunks. It did it when I bought it. Well tommarrow I am installing my BR exhaust and I will find the problem. I read a few places on here the sway bar end links are sh*t. I only got 2500 miles on the car
I post up and let you guys know what I find... There has to be a solution for this, mine is sounding like the front wheel (L/F) is falling off the car over the smallest bumps... DAMN

You won't "find" it. It's inherent to the car's suspension. I changed to Ohlins coilovers and it kept doing it for about 6 months after that...and one day...gone. Others have "found it", only to have it FIND THEM again later. Not trying to rain on your parade, just hoping to save you time while you look endlessly for it. ;0

I know when I install my springs, I checked the strut bearings for any signs of looseness and they were tight. But bad strut bearings is what it sounds like

Yup. Just don't spend 30 hours trying to fix it, like most have. Good luck!

I just noticed this clunk as well after my last AutoX. I was stuck behind 1 guy, then as I proceeded to go around him, after getting into the first gear and hitting gas, there was this brief metal against metal noise. It was just a one hit and it was gone. Later that day it happened again just for a split second. I know its not my downpipe. If it were it would happened more often.

I have an '06 GSR with about 2k miles on it now and I don't have any clunking (which I did have on my '03). Keeping my fingers crossed.
I've been noticing this noise often, and it seems like it's a loud poping/clunk noise coming from the drivers side front strut. I can definatly hear it with the radio turned down a bit. It seems to happen the most while going straight on small bumps and can quickly happen one after another. It's not that this noise sometimes happens, but it happens ALL THE TIME.
At first I thought it was just noisey struts and ignored it but then if I'm completely stopped on perfectly flat concrete and I turn my steering wheel I still get the clunk. So I have a feeling it might be some other suspension bit. any ideas? worth bringing it to the dealership?
