Hate to bring this back but i just notice the clunk today (IX 13k). I've had tanabe springs for about 4 months now. I jacked it up to inspect it and found nothing. I am going to pack the strut bearing with more grease and put some rubber around the spring area that might contact each other. Probably wont solve it but doesnt hurt to try.

Same problem here, took off my front wheels and noticed the nut and bolt that holds the clamp for the lower ball joint is all messed up ... One side is okay, but the other one is missing the nut, and the bolt is smoothed out almost... Not a good thing.

front end clunking solution

I autocross the car and the sound has been getting worse. Recently I took the car to a local mechanic to change pads and fluids. While I was walking under the car I noticed an area that was shiny. I showed the mechanic and he said yep that is the source. Hold on I will get there. He too an adjustable wrench and bent the lip down on both sides. The problem has not been back.

Now for my poor technical description of what he did and where. Excuse my incorrect use of technical words. There is an arm that comes back from the lower half of the front wheel that attaches to the sway bar. The sway bar has a large lip that comes out toward the side of the car. This is the lip that he bent down and the problem has not reoccured in several autox events and track days. Definitely saw the signs metal rubbing against metal.

Hope that helps. For me it was only on the driver side, but he bent both I think.

Okay I used the search button and found exactly the thread I was hoping to find. I have the same problem, hearing a soft clunking noise from the front pasenger side. I usually hear it when going up my driveway or speed bumps, only at slow speeds. It's not my downpipe because I just went back to stock, but I have been driving around daily with Tein S-techs for a long time now. I'm saving to upgrade to full coilvers soon. Has anyone pin pointed this problem yet? Sorry I don't have time to read all 23 pages.

If I raise the driver's side front of the car, remove the wheel and pull outward on the spring, it goes "BONG". So, there is the source of noise on my car. Having found that and hence knowing that nothing is going to fall off, I lost interest.

I'm 100% stock and hear the same loud noise coming from the front, it only happens when I'm pushing hard and drive over some wide road expansion joint probably 60-80mph when it happens.
never happened when driving slow.

sometimes when it happens I get scarred and think something fell off

what is it??

I had this loud clunking noise on my evo 9, it also happened when i took a U Turn and stepped on the gas.... I took it in for servic and they told me my strut was bad....

Shortly after my clutch went so I traded in my 9 GSR for the MR SE....Best decision I have ever made

I have a EVO 8 and I too have the same clunk. I removed and lubed the bushings and it went away for about 2mo I lived in the NE at the time. after the noise returned I removed a sway bar link thinking that possibly they were the problem and it did not change the noise. I also have a 3" RMR down pipe and the noise I hear is not from the down pipe. as far as I can tell the cause is the sway bar binding in the bushings and releasing resulting in the "clunk"

mates if this knocking ay your cars is the same as mine, i found the solution
this knocking sound in my car was appearing some times not every time
first (for 25000km) was appearing when the car was 2-3 hours on moving in trips or inside town
after thousands of km the knocking was appearing more often, in just 1 hour driving
as i could understant the knocking was from front/left area
after i could ''feel'' the knocking was somewhere near my feet
the knocking was only in very low speeds (5-20km/h) and at last on every type of road
the knocking was on all the angles of steering wheel, not only straight
i had really plenty of times inspected the car, but nothing could find
everything tight, everything ok(top mounts, ohlins coilovers, antiroll bar bushes, tie rods end *****, front wishbones silentblocks and pillow ***** everything!!!!!!)
at last the knocking was everyday and from the first even km of driving!!!
i went to a mitsi service(papras Athens) and a guy find it in 10 minutes
the problem was in a bolt of the front cross member
the bolt which is rear/left(of 4 bolts from front crossmember)
the strange was that the bolt was not loose!!!
but the guy tight that bolt with extreme pressure
after that i have done 1000km and everything is ok
m8s this problem of knocking is common in evos worldwide, also in lancerregister there are plenty of topics where ''klonckers'' have change even coilovers for that

sorry for my bad english, but i d like to help with this problem
cheers
Dimitris

ps.remember EXTREME TIGHTING FOR THIS BOLT
i had inspect this bolt more than 10 times

This is what i am experiencing now. My evo8 has been making this "tud..tud...tud.." or clunking noise at the front end. It makes this noise every time i go over uneven surfaces, whether it is speed bump, driveway, expansion joint in freeway or just any sort of uneven surfaces. It also make the noise when there is load on or off the front end, such as accelerating or slowing down. When i rest my left foot on the foot rest next to the cluth, i could feel something is "hitting" or lose beneath. I have removed the lower cross braces, and the noise is still there. So, the problem is not the cross braces. It doesnot make the noise when i do S's or when i do sharp corners, or go on-ramp or go off-ramp. Seems like it makes noise only when the front end of the car is on vertical up and down movements.

Do i have the same problem as everyone here is experiencing? What is the solution???

Mine does it. Its becoming more consistant. I've been under there and re-torqued everything to the specs in the manual and it still does it. <confused>
