Clunking front end noise??
I'm gett clunking when slowing to a stop sign, below 20mph. Sometimes when slowly accelerating, you can hear it a tad. It does it on smooth surfaces, but even more on uneven surfaces. It also does it alot when pulling into parking spaces...
i get this clicking/light clunk noise when i take off and step on the brake. its like the chassis is cracking or something. tahts how i described it. going to check in the morning on my friends lift.... got avid mounts in my trunk waiting to be installed maybe that'll fix it? with my luck maybe not..
Update on my Clunk...
Have Pss9, 3inch DP...
My swaybar is a good 2 inches away form the DP, and removing the links and moving the swaybar full motion up and down does not make it closer or farther from the DP.
Today we checked the swaybar, and removed the end links. The mechanic said that the sway bar should stay in place when the end links are removed, but mine slops down to the control arm. They assumed it was a worn bushing...put extra rubber to tighten it and see if the clunk disappears and then change to new bushing if applicable...NO LUCK...still clunking.
The mech then said that they had an E90 BMW with the clunk and PSS9 coilovers too...they decide to lower my car 2 rotations of the ring on the perch. Now there is NO CLUNK! Will observe and see if this lasts...
I always assumed the the hose on the spring and rotation of the spring had to do with stock suspension only...but I guess it applies to coil-overs too. and mine has helper springs too!
I am so confused...but happy for now.

After a few days of driving around after the last fix of rotating the perch of the spring, the clunk started coming back little by little...louder and louder.
I decided to ignore it...took it to a few mountain passes...2 sundays ago...and the clunk became a bit louder...took it again this sunday and the clunk got a lot louder. Now, there is a new symptom....
There was a bump in the mountain pass that will send the car off the ground for a bit if you take it fast enough, and I heard a very LOUD bang...like I hit something! I thought I just landed bad...but then now, when driving it on the street, I notice that the clunk happens not on compression, but on decompression.
It does not clunk if I drive into the driveway of a driveway, with a 3 inch bump going up, but it clunks a lot going down!
anyway, since it is getting worse, I have no choice but to take it back to the shop on a lifter and see what is going on inside. Since I can not only hear my clunk, I can feel it too, on the left front floor, right under the dead pedal...I will be checking for parts attached there...
Oh and a friend of mine who had a TME EVO 6 before said he had the clunk and it is normal with the car...had it when he bought the car, and had it when he sold it. He said just make sure everything is tight below...and you are good to go!
some updates on the clunk...
removed the 2 tie bars and changed the setting of the PSS9 to hardest setting "1". No clunk...works great! Switched the PSS9 to softest setting "9", Clunk is back!
So it seems as though the clunk is PSS9 related. Noticed that there is no rubber between the spring and top mount of the PSS9 on the side that clunks. Going to have rubber installed and see if it clunks or not. If it doesn't...I will put the tie rods back.
Will know tomorrow!
a friend of mine said that the PSS9 springs rotate when compressed, and the rubbing against the metal top mount causes a clunk like noise. It is a problem with PSS9 on BMWs as well.
I'm just wondering if other people who have clunk and have checked all the bushings and torque specs of everything underneath...have Bilstein suspension - stock or coilovers...

Well car is back today...rubber did not help too much. The PSS9 set at "2" is not clunking...but if I put it back to its original setting of "4" it starts to clunk again. could be the coil overs, or could be that the harder setting is preventing other parts from moving and causing a clunk.
if its coming from the front passenger side it's your upper front strut mount i'm having the same problem too but make sure your sway bar link is not lose or bad. DUMB honda and Mits. couldnt find the noise but my evo boi found the noise. what you can do is test it out by opening the cap on your strut mount in the hood and take the socket that fits and try to turn it hopefully that will work.
I have the same problem tooo.. DUMB honda and Mits. couldn't find it the problem what my evo guy did for me was. He opened the hood and on the strut mount on the right passenger side, he opened the cap and theres a nut (forgot what size nut it is) but when he cranked it to the right you can hear a clunking noise. so im guessing it's your upper strut mount try that or make sure you look at your sway bar link too. or you could try getting on top of your ride make sure you open your hood and find a stable spot by right side and make sure your have a partner who knows about cars there so when you are jumping or using your weight to push the car up and down he could hear that noise. sorry for the long notes but hopefully that help you.

Hi, first time caller - long time listener here.
I am in Australia and have an EVO 7.5 GT-A (JDM) and it too has had clunking sounds in the front-end. The other day I tracked down what turned out to be one of two noises.
First noise was a clunking over small but sharp edged ripples. The swaybar D-bushes (the ones holding the swaybar to the crossmember) were worn. I found this by unbolting one side of the swaybar links, then grabbing the swaybar and trying to quickly move it up and down while holding the still bolted end with my other hand. I could feel it clunking so it showed it was not the end-links. End links were still perfect with 95,000km on the car. I replaced the D-bushes with 23mm urethane items and the clunking over small hits is gone.
I still get the clunk over mid sized hits when turning slightly that most here seem to be getting. So its not just a problem with US Evo's. I believe this to be the upper strut mount bearing. Lifting the car up, unbolting the swaybar links, then the 3 strut top bolts you can let the strut hang down. From here you can wiggle the strut top and feel how much play there is. Mine is not bad but it is there, so I might try replacing the bearing and see if the last noise goes away.

Clunking
I have an issue with clunking on the left side and even with the car sitting still if i just move the tire by hand forward you can hear a clunk...
I think i have a tranny issue or flywheel something... because the car NEVER made any noise until 2 weeks ago... 3-4 before that i had OHLINS put on etc... i have whiteline front sway bar... the performance shop went over everything had the car for another week nothing and i mean NOTHING is lose... it's the same ride height as it was with the GTWORX springs... etc.. and it made 0 noises for 4 weeks after the upgrades... (my clunking happens on smooth surface.. rough... trans engaged... trans disengaged... sooooo??? )
so taking it in and telling them something is wrong with the trans or clutch... something...
let you know what they find... have a freindly MOD dealer in the SE MICH area... so it's a good thing..

YES and Whiteline came thru
Yup that was the issue and new ones are a coming... whether i buy or not... factory ball joints ONLY coming in the a-arms which are 800-900 installed NOT doing... so getting another set of the WHITELINES... they have help the handling big time...since lowered... so sticking with them... everything else on the car that is whiteline has been perfect.... (i think the MI roads killed these honestly... the roads are SOOOO BADDDD i mean they are just horrible)
Jeebus, just read through the 26 pages and 389 replies. I have the clunking with 87K on the ODO and Stock/Hotchkis spring combo, so i am willing to bet it is struts for me. I plan to swith to new struts and shocks with Swift Springs in the near future.
My question is about the "rubber hose trick." Should we insert the spring into the hose, like putting a sock on you foot or wedge the rubber house between the end of the spring and the rung directly above. No one has a pick of this trick and was considering it for the time being.
