ok, i have an evo 8 with whiteline balljoints, whiteline swaybar end links, energysuspension master bushing kit installed along with my fairly (brand new) D2 racing coilovers. checked everything on the front end to check where the noise was coming from, no luck.
whenever im taking a turn under certain speed(<30mph) and hit a bump at the same time(taxachusetts roads...arrrrggggg), i hear this fking clunking noise. also when im traveling <40mph, and throw my gear into neutral and come to a complete stop, i hear this banging noise.
i have fairly all brand new parts down on my car, so it cant be the damn strut mounts, nor i have a 3 inch downpipe, nor it cant be the swaybar links.
this occured after my clutch install from a shop, im thinking maybe the mechanic over there left something loose? someone help me out for christ's sake.
This sounds like the same problem I had and it turned out that the front struts were shot. Check for leaks. I had about 30K on the stock suspension when this happened. I know you have fairly new coilovers but it depends on how hard you drive and it sounds like you have stiffened everything else up so the shock is taking all of the force from blasting over bumps.

They don't have to be leaking. My front passenger side one was clunking and shot... no leaks.

You can take them off and try compressing them with your body weight...they should have quite a bit of resistance.
My front ones were blown and making all kinds of clunking noises...then they eventually start to leak. I just bought a used set on here and sent them to Bilstein to get re-valved...good to go now

-sway bar links from whiteline were loose, so tighted them up a bit, no noise.
-cross member changed as well.

2005 evo 8 38k miles, I have this sound and hear it 20% while backing out of my driveway, however, today i heard it on every damn bump in the road. Starting to freakout, took my wheel off and everything looked ok, no leaks.

Please let us know what you find out, i have limited knowledge of cars so this feels like a large issue to tackle.

Great,

I had my driver's side front axle rebuilt last year hoping that would fix it and now my sound is back. Yesterday was an exceedingly cold day in Montreal, we saw approx -20C with wind. This could be a factor since my dynamic spring rate and damper compression rate should be stiffer and transmit more noises due to the lack of compliance of cold rubber, oil, wound steel, etc.... materials 101...

Driving on the highway, I start to hear this dreaded "pop pop squeak clunk pop" whenever I'd turn the wheel even slightly to the left. This sound seems to not be proportionate to wheel speed while driving at highway speeds.

Then I decide to take a 90 deg left turn, at approx 20-30 mph, and the clunk 'n pop gets even louder and faster sounding (at a higher frequency if you will). The noise is now proportionate to wheel speed, but only when making a 45 to 90 deg left turn.

Backing into my driveway, with the steering wheel turned completely to the right (reversing left), the sound is even more apparent, so it seems that when the front is loaded, the sound pronounces itself even more clearly.

The sound is definiately a "rotating" sound, so the upper strut mount bearings and insulators are ruled out, and the noise seems to be completely independant of spring compression and road surface. Ball-joints don't seem to be the issue either, but I'm tempted to order up some Whitline goodies for the knack of it.

This is the second time this problem pops up (pardon the pun) and it is driving me totally nuts.

I have yet to take the car to a 'Bishi dealership, as there is only one dealership who's service center is capable of recongizing a pre-X Evo (Evo's weren't sold in Canada until the X was released in 2008), but about an hour and half drive away from where I live. We do, however have plenty of speed shops who specialize in rally prep, all over the province. They know what noises are all about.

EDIT: this noise can be "felt" in the driver's side footwell when resting my foot on either the clutch, brake or dead pedal. I'm assuming it is something attached to the firewall. Like a quarter of the car's rotating mass :P

All my suspension is stock except for the D2 coilovers, same thing is happening to me, I heard a loud *bang* from the front. What is it? Its really driving me crazy.
