Popping/clunking noise while driving/turning

Hey all,

I recently purchased an 03 evo GSR with 58k on it, the car did sit for a couple years but overall it's been really good to me. Recently I noticed a pop/clunk noise when i'm driving super slow through parking lots and going over the smallest imperfection on the road surface. Also I noticed the noise when I turn the wheel even when the car isn't running. The noise is only present when there's a load on the front end. I've checked ball joints and tie rods and all seem good, i'm not getting any play in any of the wheels when it's lifted off the ground side to side or up and down. It feels like it's coming from the steering column because I can feel it when I hold the column and turn the wheel. Has anyone had this issue?? The steering column is on back order through Mitsubishi until January

Check the steering shaft spline joint area for binding. Also I had a top hat on one of my struts that would make a popping noise when turning there is a bearing in there that can wear. Check sway bar links and mounts too.

If looking at the history of these cars you find owners complaining of this back when the cars were new. My car makes suspension noises but then it might go six months without making a sound. So, that makes it interesting, the start of a suspension noise could mean something needing immediate attention or it could be the same old noise the car made before. My advice: on a regular basis go over the suspension.

Mine did something similar when my strut shaft broke off where it is welded inside to the bottom of the shock. Hard for me to explain but the tiniest bump would cause the shaft to bang into the bottom of the strut.

take a tq wrench and check that your subframe bolts are torqued up.

When I bought my 03 with only 30k miles on it a couple years ago I had a similar sound that ended up being cracked OEM front strut top mounts. Just another thing to check.

How are you checking your ball joints? Simulat the wieght of the vehicle by putting your jack under your lower ball joint. Use a prybar under your wheel to check for play. If that's what you did sorry for the dumb response, but I thought I would ask.

I had a similar issue and it went away when I replaced the steering rack.
