I have a Whistler Pro 78. After doing a ton of research on detectors and reading countless reviews by experts, it's easily the best radar detector for under $200. The performance on it is around 85-90% of a Valentine 1 except it cost me $150 brand new.

If anyone is looking at buying a detector, please go here and here and read reviews on everything in your price range.

Long story short is that Cobras in general suck, V1 and Passports are the best, with certain models of Whistler and Beltronics in a close 2nd.

If you are gonna buy a detector, here's an excellent site: http://www.buyradardetectors.com

I bought my Whistler Pro 78 there and haven't been happier.

I am very happy with my Beltronics Rx-65 Pro it has to be the best I have ever used. It was recomended to me by a cop. I can pick up a cops radar over a mile away, lasers have no chance with it. I will be upgrading to their newest version as soon as I get the chance.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this but if VA uses RD detectors, you might wanna get something with a low EM signature, such as the STi.

In the 757 area just the state troopers carry them. I have been running mine for the last 6 months in the bumper without issue

my dad has the v1, I have the 9500 ix. I like the 9500 ix better. I really just don't need arrows. If I hear radar, I slow down anyways. I don't care where they are. They can be floating in the sky for all I care. It eliminates some of the false signals (not all), and I really like knowing all the redlight cameras and **** like that. Helps me be extra careful. It's distance is pretty good too. The other day I was flying down the interstate and it went off, I slowed down real quick, drove awhile and didn't see anybody, stayed slow because it was still going off and sure enough there was a state trooper right around the corner running radar.

Radar detectors are pointless. Cops all use laser now a days and you are toast regardless with ANY RADAR detector.... The cop knows your speed as soon as your detector goes off.

And laser jammers are not the most invited in most areas .. also they are alot more expensive

I had a Bel 955 but I found after a while it was all laser or a radar on demand either way your screwed.. though radar on demand your screwed with any setup.

I beg to differ, many times I will be driving on the freeway and my radar detector starts throwing off KA band readings, and about 10 seconds later a cop will come cruising by. That alone makes it worth it to me.

FWIW, the Beltronic's STi-R was stupidly simple to install in my GSR. The wires can all be routed without drilling, and the front receiver sets perfectly up front, behind the grill.

The Escort 9500ci would be similarly easy to install, I'm sure, but would require some cleverness for the back laser shifter.

I'll second this.....One word of caution though, they do not like heat, so take them out of the window while at work...they start to do funny things then...

Good then about Whistlers are they come with a 3 year warranty, bell/escort are only 1 year
