great, pics would be much appreciated. i am picking up my hard wire smartcord for my escort 8500 detector from best buy today. i definitely dont want to do any drilling, hopefully i can find a place to ground the power that wont require that

my mistake. i didn't actually have to DRILL anything. i needed the power drill and an extension to remove a screw i used for the ground wire that was tucked way up into the dash. i should have been more specific. there aren't too many choices for a ground screw under the dash, but i found one way up by the steering column. it really isn't too hard of an install. it takes more time to run the cable and tuck everything away than it does to actually plug it all in. i dont know why i opted not to get the smart cord...i just didn't see myself using it much i suppose, i just got the straight up power cord. Instead of taking pics, i might even grab my Flip Mino HD camcorder and make a little vid for you so i can actually point and explain what i did.

ha. i'm glad you liked the video. i hope i explained everything ok. i thought the video was kinda lame, but it's not like i could make a video about pointing a cable very exciting no matter what i did

you also have the option of mounting the radar lower, flush with the dash, and running the cable along the bottom of the windshield. i chose the spot i did because A) the radar is very tucked under the rearview, so it does not obstruct my view B) running the hard wire cable in the headliner was easier and cleaner to do and C) the higher the detector is, the longer range you have on detecting K and Ka band.

yea, i know it probably wouldnt be good at all for detecting signals from the rear but im thinking i might mount it in the very top left most corner of the windshield. i think it will be out of the way and even if a cop came up to the car he wouldnt be able to see it as it would be up in the corner of the a-pilar and headliner and hard to see unless looking from below like the driver seat.

i just know i haven't had a problem before with detection due to the location of the detector. i think it's funny that people mention placing their radar somewhere "cops can't see it." there's only like 2 places in the US where they're illegal. other than that, having a radar in plain sight like i do isn't a big deal...as they are legal. i've been pulled over before for speeding with my radar on, and my police scanner sitting in my cup holder, in plane sight, and nothing was mentioned. i guess i just never felt a reason to hide things i dont have to. i agree that it's important to know local laws and ordinances. but the fact is, radar detectors are perfectly legal to have in your car and use in 98% of the US...therefore there's no reason to be sneaky. If you get pulled over and a cop sees it, big deal, there's nothing wrong with having it.

the location would be perfectly fine for rear detection. i get rear signals just fine with my stealth install (https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...h-install.html)

the rear facing sensor is for laser not radar. the radar detection you get from the rear is from the signal bouncing off of objects in front of you.

No radar detector will save you. It will just give you a heads up that youve been tagged!

Well, yes and no. if you have been tagged, you will definitely know it, yes. But, if you are a half-mile down the road on a highway, you get a blip, slow down, and pass by a cop...he didn't actually clock you at that moment in time...you just detected further up the road. Radar detectors will save you if the conditions of that instance end up working out in your favor...but radar detectors will NOT ever save you 100% of the time, no.

That's why I put mine under the visor. Even though I get good enough signals usually, I'm sure they'd be better if I had it on the windshield so I was just wondering how it's working out for you guys.
I have mine hardwired and mounted with the windshield suction cups just under the tint strip in the front windshield. You can't even see it and its there clear as day. I have had a previous car broken into and they did not take the radar detector cause there are no wires and they were concentrating on the radio. That is the way to do it!!!!!!
