Radar Detectors
Have you even owned a V1? Let alone have you tested what you claim above? I've had other so called "high-end" detectors in the past which wasn't worth the price. Isn't it about time other brands have caught up to the capabilities of the V1?
Sorry, but no fanboy here. Just a satisfied V1 customer since 2002.
Thanks for the broad generalization of satisfied V1 owners.

And yes, I've used a V1 before and I hated it. I left the testing to the professionals and you can go look at Radar Roy's site for the review of the V995 and IIRC it did indeed respond faster than any other detector out there. The V1 is terribly over-rated. The only nice thing is the directional detection, but really, how useful is that unless you're actually running from the police?
BTW, I purposely said "most" V1 owners. And that is a fair assessment. Most V1 owners bought their detectors because of the marketing hype. I bought my V995 because it's more than $100 less and just as good, and BETTER in many real-world scenarios.
No, you're a fanboy as well. Have you ever owned an equivalent to the V1 before? Passport 8500 X50, Beltronics V995 or RX-65 or STI Driver? Doubt it.

Really? Only useful if you are running from the police? I'm pretty sure I find it useful to know if theres a cop coming up behind me radaring people.. or whether I'm driving up on a cop stopped on the side of the freeway radaring people... Then you can slow down, let him pass, and continue on your way, or you can continue driving with your beltronix or passport and wonder why the radar signal is getting neither stronger nor weaker untill you see the lights in your rearview mirror....
But all is good, You can use your more "economical" radar detector that will end up costing you more when you get a speeding ticket when you end up having a cop roll up on you..
Spoken like a true fanboy. Anybody who has been using a radar detector for any reasonable amount of time knows how to use it as a directional device and doesn't need a stupid flashing arrow. I'm sorry. All good RD's track multiple signals as well and have useful algorithms for alerting you of new signals, multiple signals, etc.
I have a better idea, just go the freaking speed limit if you don't want to get caught. You're arguing moot points and it's just funny.

My car just wants to go.. so I let it... Regardless of whatever reason you have your detector for or I have mine for.. simply put,, mines better. haha kidding. Get whatever radar detector appeals to you. All the ones listed above suit the need just fine.... they will all alert you of Ka and give you time to slow down.. and laser will still beat all of them.. just keep your eyes open while you drive and youll be fine.
Well that just wouldnt be any fun would it...

But the V1 is a great product. Is it $200 better than the $300 V995 I have? IMHO, no. Do the directional arrows actually help in real-life scenarios? IMHO, no. You've got to think how effective that information really is. If Ka band is going off, you're going to want to slow down and go the speed limit no matter what. I use my eyes beyond that point, and speed up again once the alert has ceased and significant time has passed. At best, the directional arrows help you get a visual confirmation of the cop or speed sign. Beyond that, they're not really useful if you already are good at tracking radar sources yourself IMHO. And at night when you can't get a visual confirmation from the rear anyway, they're not useful at all. All you would be able to tell is when a cop is tracking you from the rear or ahead of you, going the same direction. Which I suppose is useful, yes.
I dunno, I may buy a V1 used and try it out long-term. I have a friend who has one who wants to sell it/has no use for it.

I still love my 9500i and I just found out I can send it in and upgrade to the 9500x which includes preloaded coordinates for known redlight /speed cameras for $129.

well i thought i would be forced to go with the (poor choice) cobra for a stealth VA install but this guy has inspired me:

draw back is that i can't toss it in the wife's car for road trips

cops would probably still rape us though
I picked up a passport (credit card rewards almost made it free) and it should be here thursday. probably spend the weekend with the multimeter and soldering iron
I used a lot of cheap to medium grade detectors before finally stepping up to a V1 and I'm sorry I wasted my time and money with any of the others. The V1's capabilities are unmatched and the directional capabilities give you the awareness you need to react appropriately. The number is also great in case you are passing through a known false alarm area.

Ive had a Beltronics 995 for the past year and a half or so.
Its saved me from at least three whopping tickets.
It was a little expensive off the shelf for 300.00 (couldhave got it cheaper on the net) but I had to have it that day.
Three tickets at around 250 a pop including insuranse increases is well over a 1000 bucks saved not to mention my record.
It can spot radar about 1.5 miles away, less over the hill or around the curve-
